Whats the implications of using this on 02 when they release theirs? I.e. will it be recognised as an o2 handset if you wanted to use itunes, etc.

dunno mate i dont think anybody will know untill they get released at the moment all you cant do is use itunes wifi music store but they have already cracked the latest firmware so i would think that's just days away now

other than that it works perfectly on any sim except 3

if you dont upgrade the firmware everything is hunkey dory:-D
#6
Think I will just wait! thanks

Sorry but not sure i wanna buy a phone, no matter how diserable that apple will "brick" with their update.
There is a court case currently in California (Source: Information Week) where users of unlocked phones, that have been updated via apple and now are bricked.

Sorry but i wouldn't buy for that amount given the risks
I feel this is a legitimate post and not a hijack, since i'd not want someone to spend that amount of money blindly

i thought it was 18 month contracts ?

fair enough but do some research first
1. it does not brick it as you can downgrade it and unlock again
2. as long as you choose not to update untill the firmware is cracked they cannot do anything ive been using one since launch with no problems

Whilst i understand all that, and have done the research, is it really worth all the aggro is my point? (That is of course, semi-rhetorical)
Why spend so much on a phone, that is unlocked, that *could* get locked/bricked, then have to pay to have it unlocked once more? It becomes a viscious cyle.
All phone companies don't like you unlocking their phones, but apple do seem to be doing a lot to stop you. It's not like ringing 02 and getting a N95 say unlocked is it? They won't do it

they cant lock it without the imea
all that happens is it stops working if you update to the wrong firmware if this happens you downgrade and unlock again it's free and easy to unlock

if you've done a psp this is just as easy

ask hu5tler how happy he is with his

all this talk of locking is just internet scaremongering if you follow the instruction you cannot be locked or brick your iphone it's as simple as that

everybody who has bricked has ignored/forgot about not updating
#13
If i bought an iphone, and stuck a O2 PAYG sim in it as in not unlocking it at all, would it work ok???
#14
they know your imei when you connect to their network, they can tell which phone your using etc

no not at the moment but it may do come november nobody knows
#16
Rather than this becoming an unfortunate debate, i've said my piece, i'd *personally* not buy one, but good luck to those who do.
Ask questions, do research for themselves then.

Like i say, nothing against you to the seller but i think it's a gamble

As for asking hu5tler, time may well tell.......
#17
ok thanks

I think Minione is right though regarding the bricking of the phone. As long as you keep it on the current firmware and dont upgrade you should be fine. It is really like the PSP. If you left it on v.1.5 it was much easier to put custom firmware on it.

To whoever buys this just dont upgrade the firmware and it should be okay

exactly and exactly the same scare mongering went on early in the psp modding scene

my iPhone is unlocked on the o2 network, and works fine, actually posting from it now. DONT listen to scaremongers, you would have to be close to braindead to mess up your phone in any way. it truely is an amazing device, and I'm glad I imported mine

Has this been tried on Vodafone? Im interested!

I wouldn't consider purchasing this, as O2 Does have IMEI number recognition. O2 Will be offering this for £199 on a 18month contract at £35 per month. A good deal, as you can also use wifi free in many places around the UK. This handset will most likely get blocked or barred, and even if it doesn't, you won't be able to make full use of a wonderful handset!

lies lies lies..

o2 may have imei recognition, but as an imported phone, they have NO legal rights to block out service when a legal sim card is being used. The price is 279 not 199, the contract between apple and 02 stated that no subsidising of the handset would be available.

I also get FULL use of my handset, wifi, edge, youtube, safari etc work flawlessly

Oh, and t-mobile, orange, o2, and vodafone work great on my iphone, all tested
#29
I've had mine unlocked on o2 and virgin since July, I'm currently running 1.1.1 with the iTunes wi fi store and it works perfectly. I'm posting this from it :)
ps - cex will give you almost 400 pounds cash for it, dont waste your time on naysayers and ebay
#30

this works exactly the same as the uk version will and it will not be barred or locked if you do a bit of investigation before upgrading firmware
#32
