I have a computer for sale, which i know nothing about!

All i can say for sure is that its pentium 4 and has windows XP loaded on it.

I bought this computer from the local travel agent which went bankrupt for £100. It came packed like new. I have tried to use it, but you need to log on to XP, for which I did not get the username or password.

It comes with a monitor, keyboard (or two) and a mouse.. and all relevant cables.

I am looking for around £50, and the buyer collects or aranges collection.

Monitor still available £5 (+£8 P&P)

im sure you just need to reinstall windows on it.

sounds like a good price if you want to sell it. but if you want to keep it then you can get software that allows you to reset the administrator and other passwords in xp.

Or ofcourse just reinstall the Operating System

Best of luck.

dont have the XP CD

to be honest im not really bothered with keeping it, just thought it was a bargain and now its getting in the way! lol

If you decide to keep it, unless it's the main admin account that is passworded, just start in safe mode (press F8 during boot), then you should have the option of logging on as administrator and 'user'. Select administrator and hope that account is not passworded too.

I bet it has loads of peoples card details on it and holiday info. The travel agents should not have sold it without wiping it first. I'm pretty sure this PC will breach a lot of data protection laws.
That's a definitely a possibility - good thinking

v88p, before selling the PC it would be a good idea to permanently wipe the hard drive in the interest of security. Download, install & run the free Eraser either in DOS (see Help within the program), or connect hard drive to your PC & do it from there. If doing the latter, make sure you select the correct drive/partition, i.e. not your hard drive!

If above is not possible, then return the hard drive to the original owner or physically destroy it.
#15
The original owner is bankrupt so not likely to be about re computers.

Also, I would bet my house that there are no card details on there. Its just not done

If it had not been used how come it has a userid and password?

When a computer is first delivered a userid and password are not usually set up.

IT CAME WRAPPED UP.
I TURNED IT ON
ASK FOR A PASSWORD.. SO I TURNED IT OFF AGAIN

...

The travel agent did NOT use it on the shop floor..
THAT IS ALL I KNOW.

Come on people we all know that £50 for a P4 machine and monitor is a steal... I would have bought it myself but its too far for me to travel and already have 2 desktops and god knows how many laptops.

Regarding the harddrive - I am sure who ever buys it can easily format and reinstall it as it will have a XP sticker!

V88p best of luck...

It'd be the travel's agency's fault though. not the buyer/seller?
