Modem gone...? Do you mean the hard drive has failed? Just find out whether or not it's IDE or SATA and buy it from somewhere like ebuyer and install it yourself, asking advice from a local computer shop or someone on a forum (it's actually not that daunting). And in terms of a graphics card.
I have a 8800GT 512MB which cost £76 on offer but I dare say it's worth £100 at usual retail.
If you're more in the value segment, I'd recommed the ATI HD3650/3670. In terms of of Nvidia Card, the 512MB 8800GT is the bare minimum I would recommend for a modern gaming PC.

Avoid 2400HD/HD3400
8600GT
And Lower

Oh and 9800Gt=8800GT just a generation refresh, they're exactly the same card.

I used to game on a HD2600XT (512MB), do not get the PRO versions of any ATI card, ironically they're the lower performing ones and you won't get much performance out of them.
It played Bioshock well and even Crysis on medium at okay resolutions.

Recommend HD2600XT 512MB or above on the ATI side and 8800GT (9800GT) or above on the Nvidia side.
(The HD3850 might be a good compromise between price and performance - the 8800GT have really increased in price)

Hope it isn't too confusing and in some way helpful

have two pcs one for charity i volunteer for, and the other kids, main pc ok but kids one coming up as unconnectable to broadband and check modem, modem wont reset/connect to bt hub. i know of course bt broadband ok, using it now. not sure if it is best to rejig whats in the kids pc and service/add or just get another drive with what recommended here. not sure my base could handle blu ray which i wouldnt mind adding in new year. the kids pc is working fine xp wise and lots of programmes on it so dont know what is best to do.

"hence no point stripping and getting bits put in" - I think the OP is looking for a new desktop gaming PC?

If not, & you just want to change the hard drive, graphics card & modem(?) - for a start, let us know what motherboard & PSU (make & model number of each) you have. These will determine what graphics card &/or hard drive you can go for.

Have you tried calling BT support for help on getting the modem to work?

It would help if you would start with telling us the complete spec: CPU, motherboard, type & amount of RAM, graphics card, hard disk type+capacity, PSU make & model (or wattage). Also, the games they play/going to be played. And if you have a reinstall disk & genuine product key to reinstall XP afresh.

will hopefully get the spec up tomorrow guys and see what you can make of that. thanks

didnt think bt would be able to help as broadband is working, as cant replace parts competently myself beyond putting new drive in would have to factor in cost of having them replaced.

aha am now told it is possibly the connection from modem to motherboard that is at fault, having it stripped to see if worth repairing, so any advice where best to get reliable parts might need b4 xmas? is a cube pc amd athlon clocked up to max i know, but spec unknown as mate took it to look in b4 got chance. anyhow may get a while out of it for kids can save then and replace when spot a bargain.

Is the modem connected to the motherboard via USB or ethernet cable?

I'm assuming it's the latter. Do you have any problems in Device Manager under 'Network adapters', or even the lack of the network adapter altogether ('1394 Net Adapter' whether present or not is not applicable here)?

Tried a cable change? (Hope you're not stripping down the modem - not just yet anyway!)

I'm sure you're right that the kids can get a lot out of it. Don't spend money on a 'better' one unless necessary. Tell them Uncle C from the HUKD forums said so

P.S. The reason I suggested getting BT to help with the modem earlier is because I thought they supplied the device

again im assuming you mean PC.

Ok you are looking for a gaming PC.... first of all we need to know what games your kids play, how old are they and what games are they likely to get in the future (xmas list or whatever)

then we can make a start.
after all there is no use trying to find you a super tricked out monster if all your kids do is play solitaire :P

I'm so sorry to hear 128plant :-(

What graphics card were they using before? Actually, it would be better if you could tell us the full PC spec. Edit: What do you reckon still works? Looks like the mobo & soundcard have had it.

P.S. I've some parts from my standby/main PC that I could possibly sell you.

Also, would be best to stick to one thread please!

whole lot gone to graveyard, couldnt even read what says on graphic card. wouldnt even plug it in again to get spec up on it for fear will trip electrics. it is bad. gonna have to start from scratch as mobo melted totally when tried to boot up just to get rest of pics out etc. was 4 yr old and well used, so cant complain. got nice fans and case though so could make a stool for christmas and put feet up. :)
saw a couple of pc on that auction site, this evening but am not techy in case hadnt noticed, and techy mate ill, so not sure if strong enough for online battering every evening. tried to pull up graphics card reviews on them but that was even more techy, am bewildered. look forward to hearing from you further.
