why dont you just return it?
banned#2
I'd guess it's from the Dell Business Site, where returns are limited, unlike the protection offered to home users under the distance selling regs, etc...
#3
yeah, proably i suppose, though i returned my vostro with no problems.
#4
Exactly. Got it as a business customer for a friend of mine but something personal happenned to him and he cannot afford it so I am trying to sell it for him.

if you post your image in another post, it will appear bigger and easier to see

By the way the only 2 things that could be improved are the HD and the memory and still the price would be extremely low if you change these:

250GB HD £71.80 with free delivery:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/137457

2GB memory £24.81
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/138728

So for £475.61 someone could have the 2.2DUO with 3GB, 250GB HD, 8600GT and a spare 80GB HD and 512MB ram module.

The best you can do directly from Dell is £492.33 for
2.1ghz processor 3MB cache (rather than the 2.2ghz 4MB one)
2GB ram and not 3GB
160GB HD rather than 250GB
The one above Includes a camera (which I can give with mine as I have a brand new USB Logitech 5000Pro)
BUT does not include the bluetooth module which I added on mine and usually costs £20

and of course you will not have the extra 80GB drive and 512MB RAM to keep as spares or use the HD in a USB enclosure for backup and will also have to wait 1-2 weeks for delivery.

I thought it was for a friend?

Quote from my post above:
"Got it as a business customer for a friend of mine"

I work for a business and I bought it for a friend who due to personal problems cannot pay me so I need to sell it myself.
#13
Ah. Makes sense. :)
#14
No interest at all even at such a low price for a new 2.2GHz laptop with a dedicated graphics card?
Maybe everyone in this forum bought a laptop already :)
#15
what about a wii as px ??? any good to you?..
#16
Sorry, need the money to pay the credit card company before the end of the month.
If I get the Wii I will have to find a way to sell that!

Would you accept £325?

If you buy a similar model from dell it will cost you a bit less than £500 and I offer it for £379 for a quick sale (it is brand new).

I understand that you had to give it a go but it is not really fair for me to lose that much just because something happened to my friend and I got stuck in this situation.

Hello.

I recently got a vostro 1700, 2.0 core2duo, with 3gb RAM for £405 delivered direct from the DELL website. I then get quidco 5% off that.

However, I am looking for a more portable laptop for work.

So will you take £350 delivered to Manchester? And if there are any problems with it in the first year will you do the correspondence with DELL on my behalf? (i'll cover any P&P necessary of course)

Cheers

John

For your 1700 you got the 2.0 and not the 2.2 (was £80 more at the time). The 2.2GHz has 4MB cache and not 2MB like the 2.0GHz and that makes a huge difference.

You also did not get the 256GT which costs an additional £100 and the Bluetooth which is another £15 so you cannot really compare as it would have cost you close to £600 and not £405 with these specs :)

£379 is a more than fair price and as I said I am giving it that low for a quick sale and not for people to try to bargain for an even lower price!

If I do not sell it here in a couple of days I will put it on ebay for £400 min and will sell it very quickly (you can check comparable prices in ebay for such a spec). I just wanted to save me the hassle of ebay with all the scammers that hang in there.
#23
Might be interested. Thinking of swapping my HDD from my current Vostro 1500 over to this one to make use of the higher proc. -- can always swap back if their is a warranty issue. Could you pm me the service tag so that I can check original spec and warranty status. Also, can you confirm that you will change the system over to my name after purchase by completing the appropriate online Dell request form? Thanks.
#24
oh can you PM me with the same details please and also, does it come with the built in webcam? Would you do £379 delivered to Manchester then?

Cheers

In reply to everyones questions: (no PM's necessary)

1. Ship date was March 4rd. Arrived March 10th.

2. Camera not included but I have the logitech Pro 5000 camera which I can include

3. Original configuration is as in my original post except 2 changes:
As soon as the laptop arrived I exchanged the 2GB ram with a 512MB (so it went down from 3GB to 1.5GB) and exchanged 1.86 celeron with a 2.2DUO processor.

So the laptop now has a 2.2DUO rather than the celeron and 1.5GB rather than 3GB ram.
The Duo processor was from a brand new Vostro 1700 and was not needed as I replaced it with a 2.5GHz Penryn. So I thought I put that in the laptop and try to recover as much as possible from the money I paid for the Vostro 1500 laptop as my friend could not afford it anymore.

4. £379 does not include shipping. You are very welcome to pick it up though.

The laptop ownership can be transferred to the buyer with no problems.

Nice to know the configuration has changed since original purchase.

By not being upfront I'd consider you're chances of a sale to be very limited, only offering the info once an interested member asked for the service tag.

You're probably right, better off to eBay where you might not be asked so many obtrusive questions :)

Good luck...

I do not really see the problem about the original configuration changing or not.
If I decide to change the hard drive tomorrow and install a 160GB rather the included 80GB (I do happen to have a brand new spare one as I changed the one in the Vostro 1700 to a 7200rpm one) would you complain even more as it is not the original hard drive?

If I was trying to hide anything I would PM'd the members as they asked, and not posting answers to any questions in the forum!

The laptop is new as is the upgraded 2.2 DUO processor and I still have the celeron if the buyer wants to have that one as well for no charge (for a spare or for warranty purposes or whatever). If someone would prefer to have the original 1.86 processor and not the 2.2 DUO so that they get the original config, then fine by me, they can have a slower machine and save a few pounds if this will keep then happy :) They will surely not save £150 which is the cost of the processor, that's for sure!

The RAM I removed after I realised that I had t sell the laptop so that I could decrease the price a bit and find it easier to sell.
banned#28
Yes, I'd complain in the event of it having to be returned to the Dell under warranty.

What do you think Dell would return to the buyer in the event of the machine being under warranty ? A machine with a different spec perhaps ?

Being upfront helps, anything less will make potential bidders walk away.

Consider this as another free bump :)

Oh, you've edited you're post again, wonder if my response still makes sense ?

To wrap this up:

1. Just a clarification about the warratny. Dell technicians come over and fix the laptop if it is faulty under the business warranty, you do not have to send it back if you do not want to.

2. Upgrading the laptop is allowed and Dell will cover anything wrong on the laptop except the upgraded part, BUT in this case the processor is still from Dell and still under warranty AND the original processor is included as well. If you upgrade the hard drive or memory the same thing applies (and many people do that). The new parts are covered by the new supplier/seller and the rest of the laptop by dell.

3. I do not really see you interested in buying the laptop so it sounds a bit strange that you voice so many complains about this! No offense meant, just a bit curious why :)

You have a PM with a photo (the 2nd PM should have the working link)

Hi Dudey. Email me when you come back to Oxford from the wedding as I have some good news. My parents just told me that I am getting an XPS for my graduation so I can sell my Vostro 1700 as well and pay for my friends laptop so I am much more flexible now.

If you want the laptop as long as you are picking it up you can have it for £349 as I am so happy now that I do not mind if I lose some money!

Also have a look at my 1700 if you want something better, for you or a friend:

Removed the ebay reference as I did not know that it was not allowed to do both.

Michael
