Hi Matt
It sounds as though you have a ps3 with YLOD (yellow light of death) . When switched on does the standby light flicker yellow with 3 bleeps and then flashes red there after??? If so its YLOD although there is no way of telling what has happend to the PS3 it could be a number of things:
1. The PS3 has been played for long periods of time resulting in over heating.
2. Dust (which you have checked for)
3. The PS3 has been powered down during game play by switching it off at the back resulting in a faulty blu ray.
The list could go on. YLOD recently happend to my PS3 but i rang Sony and asked for a replacement due to it being out of warranty i had to pay £130.00. I'll post some more info later as i'm at work :)

I could have been tempted by this but seems I'm beaten to it. Live in Nottingham too, although would have offered £30 seeing as it'll cost over £10 to post it.
