Good idea ...............keep an important bit when selling an item .

I'm going to sell my car ,but I'm keeping the engine as I have just had it serviced !

Why dont you just sell the thing complete after backing up the all your personal info ? You may get alot more money for it complete , after all it has the operating system and drivers on it .

you really dont have a clue do you, you think just because he backs up his data that will stop someone finding it again, i once erased my whole hard drive by mistake and used software to refind 99% of what was on there, ask your self why mot major company's and banks etc when they sell there systems they remove the hard drives, or better still loads refuse to sell there pc's now and just destroy them. if the op wants to to be more safe then sorry then good on them, whats a hard drive gonna cost for this, next to nothing !!

if you use the right program you can wipe all data off the hdd but it takes about 2 to 3 days and no one can read any data from it

Still no pic's

you really dont have a clue do you,

I actually do have a clue ............cleverclogs .

I have had to retrieve all sorts of things from hard drives/Cd's/flash cards etc for customers and have an assortment of programs to do it .........getbackdata , bad copy etc, etc .I use the software to check new drives on my builds especially if they have been pre-formatted ............always a rabbit off if the new drive is formatted , only to find it has already been in someones PC and has docs and mp3's on it or worse ......bad sectors .So, it's easy to get data off a drive , but why ? I deal with new and second hand Pc's & laptops and have better things to do with my time than wanting to know what someones had on there hard drive
The point I was making ............. lots of people are looking for second hand laptops and there's many a newbie wanting a laptop as a present or for collage work and not everyone could find , fit , format a new hard drive and install a operating system .So, it limits the buyers
