I have for sale a Dell XPS M1530 Laptop, in great condition for its age. It was bought from PC World on the 15/02/08 and its 15 months on site warranty ran out on the 21/04/09, so it is therefore out of warranty. I still have the receipt, and it will come with the original box, manuals, discs and other associated items as when it was purchased.

The machine is in 100% working except for the fact that the backlight refuses to come on and if it does it flickers for a few seconds and then the screen goes blank. The screen itself is in great condition with no dead pixels or marks. It has not been dropped or mistreated. It may just need a new ribbon cable from the screen to the motherboard, or might need the inverter replacing, who knows, I certainly don't! Its way out of my league so I offer it her with the possibility of someone getting a decent machine at a bargain price.

I have tested this with an external monitor and as you will see from the picture works fine this way.

The spec is as follows...

Dell XPS M1530
Core 2 Duo T7250 (2Ghz 800Mhz)
15.4" WXGA 1280x800 (faulty backlight)
2GB Memory (2 x 1GB Kingston)
250GB HDD
8 x DVD-RW Slot Loading
Wireless, Bluetooth and fingerprint reader.
SVGA, HDMI, 1394, ethernet, 3 USB's, Card Reader
6 Cell 56 WHR Li-Ion Battery (holds around an hour of charge)
Official Power adapter

Price includes courier delivery, paypal preferred.
Shipping/Payment:
Willing to trade for anything other than games consoles or related items.

#3
Does this laptop have a webcam on it?

Also, the screen has LED backlighting?
#4

Simon - I'll take it if there are no probs running it with an external monitor. Could you just PM the service tag first? Thanks
#6
muffin - yes it has an gfx card :) As to what it is I cant remember off the top of my head, its an Nvidia something or other, am just reinstalling the gfx driver and will let you know what it is exactly.

psb-07158 - Yes it has a 2mp camera at the top of the screen. Its an LCD screen with normal backlight (not LED)

iainbain - No, no consoles or console games I am afraid. Phone is possible, depends on what phone to be honest. I can get a piccy of the lid, give me a few mins

I'll take at asking Simon_G, can pay via PP straight away if you wish to take it to PM.

@ bassman_uk - Lol, I know. I thought I'd entered that in but read over my post again and realised I hadn't. Woops.

well i have an htc s620 plus i can add £100 on top or offeryou the asking & pay right now? Let me know. Thanks
#11
That will do Simon, thanks. Send me your details :)

Ok.... its a Nvidia Geforce 8600M GT graphics card

I have just finished installing the latest drivers on it, and all is well. I have set up vista to use an external monitor (you are all aware that the one in the picture does not come with the laptop right?) but if you plug in another it might not use it until you change the settings in Vista itself. You CAN see the image on the laptop screen but it is very dark and you have to angle it in such a way that you can see it, so if it doesnt work on your external monitor at first you CAN still use the laptop to change settings etc.

Fahd- yes i did see that naughty edit adding that you would take it at asking after you saw the interest in the thread.

As for who gets it I suppose its between psb07158 and Liddle....not sure the he right way to do this...although I am sure I have the choice on who I sell it to, especially as you both posted at the same time (literally!)

Any one want to clarify the situation?
#13
It's entirely upto you mate.

Flip a coin? Lol.
#14
Ok flipped a coin (literally!) and Liddle won! Sorry psb.....

Liddle you have a PM...
#15
It's your choice, but obviously I'd like it and payment is ready. But yes, flip a coin in needed :)

Whoohoo! :-D
#17
No worries, thanks anyways :).
#18
Liddle, clear some space mate I cantg get a PM through...

psb07158 - From the 3 hours of research I did earlier tonight, even with the screen coming on it could still be the inverter as several people on the Dell forums mention similar problems on the same and other Dell machines and the tech all point to the inverter as a reason why the backlight is dead (and the bulbs of course) but knowing my luck its a simple cable as you said. I just don't have the time or energy to fix it!
#19
Space cleared - and payment made. And thanks for the link psb07158. Tbh though, I don't even need to fix it as this one will be permanently hooked up to a monitor. I've got a M1330 that I use as the one that travels up and down the stairs and into the toilet :)
#20
payment received, thanks Liddle, and thanks to all those interested.
#21
Hey Simon_G... Guess I missed out on a great deal...

Just out of curiosity, would u mind telling me how much you bought it for...

Thanks.
#22
Sorry to take so long to get back. Arrived yesterday but just got it out of the box today! All good, hooked up to the external monitor where it will remain. Thanks for a smooth and pleasant deal - feedback on the way
#23
Simon_G, hope you can help on this one. Just hooked this up properly today for the first time and everything fine except that the LAN is not recognised. I've reinstalled the drivers from both the disc and the Dell website but still can't get it recognised. Since I'm setting this up as part of a wired network it's a bit more of an issue than it would otherwise be (wireless is working fine btw). Any thoughts or workarounds would be appreciated - from you or anyone else reading this - cheers
#24
Hi mate,

Sorry to hear you are having problems with it. I only used the LAN once or twice with no issues, but appreciate that things can and do go wrong.

If you have used the Dell drivers, the next port of call will be to try a different OS to rule out a Vista or driver problem, so either Windows 7 or preferably some form of Linux (Ubuntu 7.10 seems to be popular for this laptop)

Failing that, then it looks like an expresscard lan port type affair, around the £15 mark from Ebay.

Not sure what else to suggest really. I'd rule out the driver first by trying a different OS.

holy crap what a good deal!
#26
Cheers for the advice but installing a new OS is a bit too much hassle tbh. I'll probably make do with a cheap USB LAN adaptor as they are only a couple of quid on ebay - should do the job right?

yep it will liddle. before you buy that have you double checked that the lan isn't disabled?

right click my computer and click manage, then device manager. check that there are no red crosses or yellow warning signs around the "networking adaptors"

I sold my wii btw

Yes, saw you sold it at asking. Well done

I've been in and out of the device manager every time I installed updates and drivers, but it's never shown up there. Only the wireless has ever shown under network adapters.. Even went to Intel site and let it scan for driver suggestions, but still didn't show. USB adaptor it is then :)
