Why? The boxes aren't illegal in any way, the way that some users pick up channels from them is. :)

the T&C of your contract with Virgin says that you're only permitted to use the rented box from them.

i do but it annoying as **** that i keep seeing these going for sale on here and Mods not shutting them down
http://www.virginmedia.com/myvirginmedia/customer-news/tv-fraud.php

i've been a customer since 1998 and paid for my service every month.
why should anyone else be any different?
from the above link

In order to watch Virgin Media’s TV service you must pay a monthly subscription and use authorised equipment. Using an unauthorised set-top box on our network infringes copyright, goes against our terms and conditions and is against the law. (Click here for the relevant section of our Terms & Conditions to this for your reference).

its also against the T&C of this site too

Also, the boxes themselves are not illegal. just what they are used for by SOME people.

well to be fair, unless the person is wanting to strip one down to see how they work, if they are buying one, its to connect to the cable network owned and run by Virgin Media.
thus breaching the T&C of their contract (if they have one) which is covered by civil law.
if they don't have a contract with the cable company and connect it to the network to receive TV channels they aren't paying for, then its fraud.

y'see why it annoys me so much is cos I spend a night in jail after my former employer's shop was raided cos unbeknownst to the people who worked for him, he was buying these boxes from abroad, coming in after hours 'updating them' and then selling them on to people round the local pubs.

NTL Telewest got the local fuzz to raid the store, we were all arrested and questioned.
Virgin Media took over the case as a civil matter when they bought out NTL/Telewest and my former boss was prosecuted for £40,000 and 300hrs community service.

sounds bad mate, sorry to hear that.

However, your boss got himself up the proverbial creek because he updated the firmware and programmed them to receive channels free.
technically, the boxes are only meant as freeview boxes.
its the act of receiving channels illegally that makes it a crime.

was a nightmare!

technically they might only be freeview boxes, BUT if you connect it to the cable network even to receive free to air channels then its not authorised by virgin media.
so therefore against their T&C.

a freeview PVR box is easily available on the net or off the high street

When it comes to virgin though i don't mind ripping them off, they've done it to me for the last 3 years, £100 to intall my 50mb broadband, rip off, adding a random £50 to my bill, couldn't get it back from the indain rep on the phone. rip off, i could go on.
