I have an ibook for sale.

I took this from someone who owed me money hoping to fix it but it has beaten me and unless I sell it I am still out of pocket.

It is an ibook g4 12 inch 1.2ghz 30gig hd and when I got it the laptop powered up and I could see the op sys and it worked fine but no backlight.

I bought a new inverter from ebay and fitted it and on came the backlight so I thought great it's fixed. The op system was corrupt and it would not install from the supplied 10.3 discs supplied so no idea why but downloaded lepoard and that installed with a 512mb ram stick I had and ran fine for a day then it just started freezing. Now it just beeps 3 times at start up and nothing else so it is beyond me. The screen was hard enough to take apart to fit the inverter.

It comes with charger, battery(only holds 10 mins charge), 10.3 install discs and manual.

I know I can sell it in parts on ebay as the screen seem to sell fine. I think the motherboard is faulty as it is the same from all 3 other sticks of ram I own, though the stick of 512mb in it does not work in my old acer?

So if anyone thinks they can fix it then you are welcome but it is sold as faulty.

Open to offers too.

I need to also add that the previous owner before the guy I got it from had the logic board replaced under warranty and the last guy said he got it fixed by someone but did not say who or what was wrong with it.

I have not taken it apart any further than the screen inverter and memory cover. I would have done if I had found a working logic board to try at a reasonable price but it does look hard to get into and logic boards are hard to get hold of cheap. I have no electronics skills either so no point me looking at the board.

I will just strip it and sell the parts if of no interest here.

Looks destined to be stripped for parts and sold on ebay at the moment!

Price reduced to £80 to see if I can shift it without stripping it:)

Might help, sounds like you might have disturbed or in the worst case damaged Memory somehow with static.
The power on self-test resides in the ROM of the computer. This test runs whenever the computer is turned on after being fully shut down (the power-on self-test does not run if the computer is only restarted).
If a fault is detected during the test, you will not hear a normal startup chime. Instead, the system will beep as explained below. If you experience one of these beeps, you may call your Apple Authorized Service Provider for additional troubleshooting assistance.
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
In addition to the beeps, on some computers the power LED will flash a corresponding number of times plus one. The LED will repeat the sequence after approximately a 5-second pause. The tones are only played once.
Note: In this case, a flash is considered to be 1/4 second or 250 ms or greater in length.

I get 3 beeps so as I thought a memory problem. The thing is I have 2 different 256mb modules and a new 1gig one which the laptop will not reconise but all 3 work in an acer which takes the same memory. But a known faulty one which will not work in anything else worked in the ibook for a while before this problem.

£50 delivered?
#14
Mmm tempting but it owes me 80 quid as it stands and I am sure the hd, screen and superdrive and airport card will get me more than £50.

From further reading it looks like it will need a new logic board so unless someone wants it who already has a working one it aint gonna be cheap to fix.

tbh ive seen DOA ibooks sell buy it now on ebay for £55-60. By the time youve took ebay and paypal fees you would be left with less.

My offer of £50 stands. But good luck either way with it.

I will leave it as I have seen screens alone go for 50 quid so if I can't get 60 quid clear after delivery I will just split it as I think with a bit of time I will get that easy as its in pretty good condition.

I do know it is pointless getting a logic board as they are going for £150 minimum for a working one. I may as well get a new netbook and put osx on it!
