The DVD recorder is a Sony RDR-HXD860 in silver. We have used this about 3 times and thought we would sell it as it is too good a unit to be sitting on a shelf doing nothing. Would rather someone get some use out of it. This comes complete with scart lead, remote control and instructions, there is one tiny scratch above the record button but is not noticeable unless you really look hard for it.
It offers all of the conveniences and advantages of a HDD recorder - around 40 hours of recording on the 160 Gbyte hard drive (more if you use one of the compressed recording formats) and 'Timeslip' recording, enabling you to pause and rewind live TV.
The HXD860 can record on most formats of disks: DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW & DVD+RW. It can play, but not record, DVD-RAM format disks too. CD's can also be played, including CD-R/RW, but not SACD. DivX & MP3 format support is included.
As you'd expect for this price, the machine comes with a built-in Freeview digital tuner. This means that you can record digital quality programmes, and it also enables the Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) to provide an on-screen guide to the next seven days of TV programmes. Selecting and recording programmes is made very easy indeed, and this is one of the Sony's strongest selling points.
Connectivity is excellent. As well as the usual range of connectors (SCART, RGB, S-video, component and optical audio) the RDR-HXD860 is one of the first DVD recorders to support high definition upscaling to 1080i/720p resolution with a HDMI port for connecting to a HD Ready television. It also has a DV input port, which enables you to connect a DV-compatible camcorder for transferring your home videos to DVD.
