What size monitor do you have? To play Crysis on reasonable settings at even a low resolution of 1024x768 you will need a 8800gt 512mb at least. That same card should not have a problem with Gears of War at 1680x1050 with x2 AA though.

Remember that Crysis is the most graphically demanding game out at the moment - you need serious hardware to play it at its highest settings.

PCI or PCI-Express?

If PCI no such card exists. If PCI-E then look at either at an 8800GT or HD 3870. They'll be fine with crysis at medium settings.

For a brand new 8800GT 512mb your looking at spending about £160-180. Have a look at the 256mb version though as you may be ok with that. It costs a lot less too; around £120-130.

8800GT - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/134393

HD3870 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/139134

The 8800GT is more expensive, but it is better by about the same amount. So you cant go wrong with either.

I would advise getting this card

Not the cheapest HD3870 out there, but it is overclocked and has a good fan which will keep it cool.

i have the 8800gt with a c2d and it runs crysis at high with that res and no problems, if you are set on medium then you could save yourself some cash and look for an old gts (320/640) or get the gt or new gts and crank it up!

interested in a 8600GTS 256MB for £70 + P&P/paypal fees?
#9
A quick question without hijacking the thread if I may.

Is there a comparison site to compare the performance of different graphics cards?
Most of the time can't tell which one is better, just that one is more expensive than the other.

www.tomshardware.com has great comparisons.
www.futuremark.com lets you search all computer setups with benchmark scores (benchmark you own system too, my 3dmark06 is 14,000, beat that)

May be a bit of an extreme tbh I played Crysis on 1024 x 768 on low/medium settings on a 7600GT 256mb lol and it was fine through the whole game apart from a couple of bits where turning all down to low sorted it out! Crysis may be demanding but I doubt anyone would release a game with the minimum requirements of a 8800GT :P well not anytime soon

Yeah it was a bit of an exaggeration but I did say reasonable settings not minimum!

I was basically going off the benchmark tests published in this months Custom PC magazine. They tested various cards but did not include the Ultra or GTX. They say that the only card out of the ones they reviewed that was capable of playing Crysis at 1024x768 with no AA was the 8800GT 512.

What I didnt read was the introduction that said the tests were done with settings on high!
So please ignore my previous statement - medium settings on Crysis at 1024x768 does not require a 512 8800GT! :)

not a card out there that will play crysis maxed out at a high resoulution like 1600 1200 and good fps and i mean like 60fps maybe the new 9800card will get close but by all reports even that wont, if i cant play a game all maxed out i dont see the point.

What card did you get in the end mate?

ended up buying the ATI X1800XT 512MB but its only temporary untill i can afford the 8800GT

graphics card aside what cpu and memory are you using? I'm using a 512mb 8600gt super, 2gb xms2 6400, and an e6400 core 2duo and although i can run crysis on medium at 1280 its not a fun smooth experience. CPU matters a lot.

Word of warning regarding 8800gt's.
These cards have rubbish coolers on them (most of them anyway!). I found I had stability problems playing Crysis, as the card ran in the high 90's under load and was mid 60's when idle. I attached the Thermalwright GT ( http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-053-TR&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=787 ) and a fan, and the card now runs at 60 degrees max!!
I was even able to overclock it to 700/2000 (core/mem), and it's completly stable. (not one crash yet!)
Gave me a little over 145000 3d06 score

The e6400 overclocks to 3.00 ghz without much hastle. You may want to replace the stock cooler tho.

The amazing gameplay perhaps? Just a thought ...
