if i understand the rules correctly, cable boxes are considered a restricted item and cannot be sold here...

Sky boxes can be sold, but as you said, virgin (cable) boxes cannot. No problem with this listing.
OP should have a photo with his user name on it though.

please be aware that pairing up a 2nd hand sky-hd box could unwittingly tie the buyer into a new 12 month contract even if they dont add the hd-pack.
i got stung by it last year

but how? your subscription is dependent on what your existing is, and counter validated by the active/non-active status of your viewing card in the box, not the box itself...unless someone pressed a button on the remote that sent a message about being interested/activating an HD channel.

I was offered the Sky+ HD box but did NOT have to take the HD pack at an additional £10/month, and I have the HD box now and just enjoying the free HD channels (ITV2 HD, etc).

You need to make it clear you don't want the HD pack adding on, recently did it for FIL and no £10 per month has been added to his sub

bought a 2nd hand HD box myself, as others mention. make the operator aware that you dont want another HD subscription if you already have one. also make sure they dont assume you want the HD package moved to your new box, as this will remove it from your existing box.

I never added anything to my sub, just rang to replace my old broken sky+ and pair my card to an old hd box i bought off ebay,
6 months later when i rang to cancel i was told that by doing that i upgraded to a new 12 month deal even though my package never changed?
just a warning to anyone buying.

@korky69: you should be making a complaint to the OFT as no merchant can switch packages of services on customers without any prior communication with them, either by post, phone, or email.
