Very cheap or even FREE desktop?

bigdavecox90 Avatar
9y, 5m agoPosted 9 years, 5 months agoFeedback:0 Positive/0 Neutral/0 Negative
I know this sounds really stupid, and I'm probably expecting something for nothing, but I am in real need of a desktop.
Does anyone have one they no longer need and are willing to give me?
I am currently saving at the mo, however I am only 17 and only have a Saturday job.

Please help me,

Thankyou, Dave

Hate to be the one to break it you but short of getting lucky on freecycle.. no chance. Who cares if your 17 with only a saturday job? Everyone has something they can't afford - noone should get a freebie. Ebay has some seriously dated kit for next to nothing, and it might be worth checking out a local tip.
#3
I knew there would be someone like you, it's only worth a try.
Thanks for the useless comment :)
#4
So what are you using at the moment to post messages???
#5
A laptop, however my laptop is not quick enough, to run some of the programs I need, eg Dreamweaver. My Dad had the desktop from our house when him and my Mum split up. I was just asking if anyone had an old desktop, so I could do it up. Do you understand mate? Or are you going to have a pop like the other guy? :(
#6
i have a desk top i can give you where are you based
#7
Thanks meszog, I'm located in Dorset.

If you think someone is going to provide anything more than old tech for free/ next to nothing your sorely mistaken. The attitude doesn't help either. If you feel my post is out of order complain to a mod using the ! button.
The suggestions in the post are valid - freecycle and the tip is your best bet.
#10
What spec is the machine you're posting on? Dreamweaver doesn't take a lot to run really... and anything you get for free isn't likely to be any faster than you're current spec, surely?

Just my 2 cents of course.
#11
I don't feel it is out of order mate, just trying to look, there is no harm in that is there??? Sorry if i seemed snappy.

And OK meszog, thanks for the offer. :)

That's not snappy, that's plain rude :x . He suggested freecycle and the tip - both very good suggestions.

Just been to the recycling centre, to ask, and the dumbass that was there, said they can't sell them or give them away because they are electrical. Does this sound right? :x
#14
dumbass?

I don't like your attitude!

I have to admit mate, you will feel a lot better if you saved up for it by doing jobs for anything from anyone. Hate to kill your dream but i doubt anyone is gonna give it to you, you cant just go around asking for things and hoping to get them free.

I would suggest the best thing for you to earn money is with summer coming up is to buy a very cheap set of electric hedge trimmers for about a tenner. You can get these from b&q or aldi. Then go round to peoples houses were their hedge is overgrown and knock on their door offereing to cut it. Normally because it looks such a big job people can give you £10 upwards for doing it.

Do a resonable amout of houses and raise a couple of hundred quid and buy your self a computer. Trust me learning to get along on your own in life will make you a better person.

Dreamweaver itself costs hundreds...

Thanks for the help Bryan and Sematic. The whole reason I want my laptop and a desktop, is because there is also my sister in the house, and the laptop is actually mine. Sorry if it seems I've got an attitude, its just I am finding it hard to pay for things since my Mum and Dad just split up.

Sorry to hear that bud but if times are hard, surely you should know how to get your priorities right?

I'm just 18 and was 17 last year, yes all students are fairly tight on money but that's where the key lies. I want an Audi A3, now I don't expect anyone to tip me one, I'm working over all this summer in order to afford one.

Been in my first year of university and whilst working very hard with a part time job I was able to afford a good spec pc with all the bells and whistles as some of you guys may know :)

I'm sure you can share/make do with a laptop. Sorry but this is reality bud :)

Why don't you try getting a second job over the summer hols?

I'm sure some kind soul may offer a pc . . but what you want is something that will run DW smoothly. Just doesn't seem feasible.

try looking down your local car boot

Yeah I'm going down to a market tomorrow, thanks for the advice guys!

probably because they cannot risk legal action if you are injured.or even killed by an electrical fault in the PC.

I would check with Citizens Advice as they may know of organisations that give salvaged PCs to worthy causes...like poor families (who have a car, sky and a flat screen TV ..LOL)..it may get you a pc..albeit a old one.

Yes, that is right. They won't allow you to take or buy any electrical equipment or they're not meant to.

Try putting a wanted ad in your local paper and on notice boards.
#28
Try freecycle as mentioned. It's your best bet!

Or work for it as has been said!
#29
I have subscribed to that Freecycle thing but it says I need to wait to be accepted???

Sell your laptop then! Laptops always fetch a good price, even if they're really old. I think many of us would like the luxury of a desktop and a laptop.

Also, as someone else posted, Dreamweaver costs hundreds of pounds, how can you have that and not a desktop to run it?
#31
I had a copy given to me, as we were using it at school.
#32
Fair enough.

My point about the laptop still stands though. You'd get a more powerful desktop for the money you could sell the laptop for.
#33
If you can afford a few quid to cover postage etc i may be able to help you out toward the end of June. PM me if you're interested
#34
Well hopefully your in school/college, if not you should be!!!! lol. And as your parents split up i think you can claim EMA. Thats £30 a week max and £100 bonus every term i think. So use that and save up in 2 months you should have enough to buy yourself a decent PC with your income from your saturday job too that would be more than enough no?
#35
Dont mean to sound nasty but you sound like a moaner, im 24 and when I was 17 I struggled on about £3 a week, had to walk for 45 minutes each way to college, could only afford new underwear about once a year it was that bad, rant over.
#36
Hi, Sorry to sound a bit nasty to you, but im a student too, (im 19) life is hard - nothing comes for free, when i left school (at 16) i started to work to earn money, now when i struggle for cash i sell thing i dont need any more, i get by fairly easily now, but remember nothing in life is for free
#37
dont worry someone has some rubbish desktop out there just wait or go to a carboot.

i had a few desktops binned them aages ago
#38
Thanks Hustler!
#39
Oh and sweetchinmusic, I have tried claming EMA, however cannot get it, due to my parents earning more than the minimum wage limit.

Thanks for that!

Being 18 myself i know what it is like sometimes struggling for money.

Come to think of it a while back someone posted about a recycle site where you make a request of say for instance a desktop computer and someone donates their old system to the site and then you take it off their hands, another mans junk is one mans treasure. Although i do think that maybe they wont be powerful enough for dreamweaver.

This is purely a shot in the dark and I dont know where you live but most towns have a few streets where all the solicitors and companies run their businesses. Ask around and sometimes you will find that a business may be getting new computers and are throwing away a couple of second rate computers that they think are broken when in reality they might just need a new sound card or the case could be cracked.

It is just an idea but you may strike lucky. Put your lucky underwear on or whatever you have that brings you luck and go asking!!!

Or your local school!!!!
