Video Camera needed - help/advice please!!

Hello,

With Christmas just around the corner i'm left with the job of sourcing a video camera of some sorts to make sure my nephews 1st full christmas is caught on camera.

I can't afford to be paying top dollar for a shiny new camera so have two thoughts - firstly and my preferred choice would be to hire or borrow a video camera for the christmas period. I don't know if any company's do this but if they do and any forum readers know of the companys then please please give me a shout. Alternitavely if i find a cheap enough one to buy then i'll buy one - so again if any readers have one that they don't use or one that has recently been upgraded by a new purchase and wouldn't mind selling one then again please let me know.

Any help is very much appreciated!!

Regards

Thanks, i'll definately bear this in mind. As i mentioned i'd prefer to find a plave that hires them out as i'd not really get the use out of it to justify buying one. As i guess may be the case with yourself. But if it comes down to it maybe that's the road i'll have to take.

With mobile phones now having such good cameras i'd imagine video cameras of the kind i'm searching for will soon become a thing of the past.

Thanks again

If you hire a camera, you are most likely going to have to get it locally, so your best bet is probably to do a google search and a search through the yellow pages (or yell.co.uk). The chances are though, for a few days camera hire, you are going to be paying the same sort of price that you would do for a reasonably ok home video camera.

If you're put off buying one because you don't think you'll get the use out of it, remember you can always sell it on (if it's in good condition and still under warrenty you should get a good price for it). The amount of money you'll lose will probably still be a lot less than hiring one.

One last comment (from a fellow doting Uncle ;-) ), be aware that whilst it is really nice to capture everything on camera, if you're the one doing the filming, make sure that you don't spend your whole time behind the camera. Otherwise, although you end up with a nice video tape, you'll suddenly realise that you don't actually have any of your own memories of the event because you were so busy watching everything through the lens of a camera.

Pop into your local independant camera shop and have a chat with them.

You never know and nothing ventured, nothing gained :)

Thats a good point about selling it on, and again one i will bear in mind so thank you.I will also check google/yell to see if there's anywhere local - but like you say i may be better off buying one and selling it one for what it will cost to hire one.

Either that or buy it just prior to Christmas and return it directly after ? Check returns policy first though ;-)

Naughty but nice :)

Hmmm interesting! ha ha

I like the sound of this but knowing my luck they'd not take the thing back. I'll have to look at a few return policies to see if i could get away with it.

I've looked at a few digital ones on Ebay and they'r only £25 new - but you have to wonder what the quality would be like for that price.

Hmm decisions decisions!

One thing I forgot to say - if you don't have friends or family who have their own camera that they could lend you, it might still be worth asking around to see if anyone can get hold of one. Some companies will lend out their AV equipment to their employees, and I would imagine some schools would do the same for their staff too (I know my school used to but that's going back a good few years now  ).

Forget Argos ! Some companies will actually state "if you are not completely happy/satisfied return etc etc" so it's not as "criminal" as it might first appear lol ! You obviously need to be totally proficient at repackaging, not that hard.

Tesco would be the obvious choice as I think that even if you buy Tesco Direct you can return to store if it's not suitable. Please double check that though on the specific item, I've certainly done it on other items.

Waste of money, you'll be sorely disappointed.

regards

ps. If you "get" a mini DV camcorder shout in my direction and I'll lend/sell you a few tapes. Actually that brings up another question, if you hire or buy to return have you thought about how you are going to store and replay the media for the future ? I'm sure you will have but worth mentioning :)
