That is one of the funniest things i've read about the wii.
When i saw how the controller could be used, i figured there should be some adult game's made  but, oh dear, i don't wanna say anymore, let alone ask :giggle:

He he, dont get me wrong, its a fantastic console i love all my other games, but i was bitterly dissapointed by this game.

I've heard that Red Steel was crap - is it that unresponsive to the Wii controls ??

No, it wasnt the controls i had a problem with.

I wrote this on another forum, ill just copy and paste:

First off i would like to say, i love FPSs i was originally a PC gamer and only migrated to consoles the year before last. I always disliked FPSs on consoles because i don't like using sticks, so when i heard of red steel i was whooping for joy.

After playing it, i can only say how horribly disappointed with it i was. Everything about it has an unpolished unfinished and sometimes just downright lazy feel about it.

I was really really excited about red steel, I've been looking forward to it for months, but in the end it was pants.

Ive played ALOT of FPSs 40 or so i reckon, some really good, some horribly horribly bad.

Red steel would definitely be in the bottom quarter, not the worst but close.

Heres why:

Firstly, the controls are no worse than any other console shooter, but certainly no better.

The supposedly revolutionary AI, it is AWFUL really REALLY bad. Not just in a few instances but so consistently buggy throughout the game that it really makes you wonder if it was play-tested at all.

The weapons;
In my opinion the bread and butter of an FPS lies in two main things, its AI and its weapons. A shooters weapons MUST be fun and satisfying to use, else the entire game is a little pointless, whats the use in playing a shooter when the shooting is no fun? A perfect example would be timesplitters 3, every single weapon in that game looks good, feels good and is goddamn satisfying to use. The weapons in red steel feel very generic, and you certainly get no joy from shooting them.

And the AI being so horribly lacking in the "I" it sucks the last of the potential out of it.

Of course other things contribute significantly to game-play as well, level design for example, done well it can make even a slightly dull shooting experience a little more compelling, but in red steel, while it isn't bad it is just very linear and generic. Noting special.

Story line? Well its there, but i never really cared about it, in fact most of the time i just wanted to skip it and get back to trudging through the levels. And bearing in mind how uninspiring the trudging is, that tells you something about the story i think.

I think its important to point out that i really wanted to love red steel. And it had so much potential but failed on every account, i would suspect due to pushed deadlines and an inexperienced development team.

We were promised a killer app for the Wii, and a revolution to the FPS genre, I however found that it failed on almost every account and in many regards took a step backward.

Its not an abysmal game, but when compared to other shooters in the genre it lacks any sparkle what so ever.

Thats my take on the game, others have loved it though, so if you think you can look past all the flaws you may find something that you like. Having said that, if you are an FPS fan, and have played a lot of shooters I doubt you will be able to forgive its failings.

I haven't played call of duty so i cant comment on that.

The worst thing about red steel is also the thing which is supposed to be it's crowning feature, the sword play, it's worse than crap, what you do with the wiimote is nothing like what happens on the screen, unlike in wii sports baseball where you're every action is represented.

The sword fights become very old very quickly, on the whole the game isn't that bad, but it's definitely nothing special.

Uhm, not a chance that's even close to true. Wii baseball is as bad as every other wii game as far as controller response is concerned. It doesn't remotely represent your actions with the remote. I can do a much faster fastball by just flicking my wrist than I could by actually doing the fastball action. I can hit normally score about 10 home runs a game without moving my hand more than a few inches never mind bothering to stand up and swing it like a bat.

Boxing is the worst. Never seen anything that bad in my entire life and I remember playing boxing games on the commmodore 64.

So artemis what your saying is the functionality of the controllers (signal) to the actual wii is really bad?
there is a time delay for the signal to reach the box and for it to send it to the tele?
#15
Worse than that. For example in boxing I'd estimate that for every 5 punches I threw with the controllers the guy onscreen threw one. And that one was pretty random and didnt resemble any of the 5 I threw in any way shape or form.

Also, every now and again my guy would just throw a punch based on what I can only guess was some small movement of my hands.

The best part was when I put my controllers down on the end of the bed. The natural movement of me putting on boots and talking etc made the controllers roll around and my guy beat the computer opponent. My 'bed' knocked out the AI!

Every other Wii sports game was just as bad in it's own way. Bowling was easy beyond belief, a small wrist flick and you average between 8 pins and a strike every shot. Tennis was a waste of time as your movements beared no resemblance to the tennis players movements at all. You just made any movement at all with the controller at the correct time and your guy hit the ball back in a random direction.

The worst part is that my BH had loads more fun by going through all the motions. Her guys did the 'exact' same random crap as mine but she at least had fun pretending to play.

Instead of buying a Wii just stand in front of some sporting dvds, press playa nd use your own tennis racket, steering wheel, baseball bat etc. You'll have just as much of an effect on the guys on screen as you do with the console.

Heh, as amusing as that tirade was, i have to disagree.

While i agree, that boxing is unresponsive, i havnt played that game since i first tried it.

Tennis is not random, i can only assume you didnt give it enough time, but it is perfectly possible to accuratley control the direction of the ball.

And the bowling? Yep its easy, but its fun, and has a surprising amount of depth. Try the training modes. Im yet to pass level 14 :(

However to call the Wii remote un responsive is doing it a dis-service, the only problems ive seen so far have been software based.

Seriously though, red steel.. ick.
#17
I think that's more the case of your mind playing tricks on you, my BH was convinced she was affecting her player to that degree too - until I convinced her to sit down and just lazily flick her hand about. Lo and behold, same results.

Someone pays £180 for something, they generally 'want' it to work. I give it a month or so before the mind stops playing tricks and people realise that they've just been waving their arms around like idiots for no real reason.
#18
I think the baseball is perfect once you get used to it !

The boxing is a bit unresponsive with the nunchuck, but you cant throw punches like you would normally, you need to throw your arms perfectly straight to register a punch !

Sorry about the PM's - my box was full, so you can try again if you want to.

BFME2 for £30 is a bit pricey mate for that game sorry.

I also have Prey to trade - completed that the other week, it gets awesome once you get past the 1st couple of levels :)

Apologies for jumping on this thread, but if the original poster is not interested in Red Steel then I might be.... Serj - please could you pm me the lowest price you'd accept if you want to sell it.

Thanks.

#22
Would you like NEED FOR SPEED MOST WANTED for the XBOX 360 for £15 including p&p.
#23
You mean this one for £12.89 ??

http://www.sendit.com/game/item/6000000002248

Thats an old game now - I'll give you £5 for it
#24
That's out of stock. And for £5 I'd rather keep the game.

If you do want that game for a similar price, they seem to be going on ebay for around £6 - £7 at the moment so you could grab it there.
