If you have a licence key already it should state what version of xp it's for, i.e home, pro and SP1 or SP2.

There's different key's for different versions, plus different Service Packs.

So there will be a key for XP Home, another key for Pro, SP1 & SP2, if you have the other lappy handy, just have a look at the sticker and see what version it's for.
#17
Nope won't work....atleast not if you planning on doing the MS updates.
#18
bit of a techie hear.... but if windows has had online product activation it require that you have the same key componets as it was registerd on E.G.

XP license
dual core
667 ram
seagate HDD
asrock mobo

and you put it on your vista laptop wich *may* have differnt specs it wont activate.... you will just get a msg saying it's already been activated on another machine
#19
If it's OEM (Stuck on the outside of another machine or purchsed with another machine) it can not be transfered to another machine by law.
You may also find that retail discs do not work with the license you have.
Just a bit of advice before shelling out on something that may be useless

I pretty sure an OEM licenses will not work with a retail disc, I've had the same problem.
(P.S - before anyone maons at me, this is advice not because I have a license and cd for sale)

yeah that would be gd how much ?
#28
well you can buy XP disc very cheaply now... try some computing websites like aria, novatech, microdirect etc

or phone up microsoft and ask them to reset the code (so u can use it again) - sometimes they will sometimes they wont.... it's a bit of a hit and miss dependant upon the person on the end of the phone ;)
#29
Just enough to cover the cost of postage and the envelope - £1
