Looking to buy a decent active subwoofer to add to my surround sound set up.

Any offers welcome, wanting to pay anything around £80-100 and will consider anything in decent condition but in full working order.

Preferably local to Merseyside as postage costs may be high but will consider paying postage if offer is right.

Again, having difficulty trying to find reliable review for this. I've heard a lot of mixed things about subwoofer quality and it's always advised to spend big which I don't want to do; but I would prefer to be able to judge my cheap purchase on reviews.

Reviews on speakers are always about an individual opinion, and will also depend on the price it's reviewed at

Here's my mini review, The Kef is a very decent sub woofer, which booms bass, it has had some reliability issues, but this has had all the Kef Mods done

You may be hard pushed to get a better sub in the price range you are looking at though

If you want to spend a bit more though, i recommend a BK XS200, or if you want to push the boat out, a BK Monolith

I understand that reviews are opinion, but reviews from websites such as whathifi are more useful to somebody who knows nothing than reviews on amazon for example. Knowing that the reviewer knows what they're talking about gives peace of mind.
I'm not looking for a 5 star all singing all dancing sub, just something which I can be confident will do a half decent job. I did read somewhere that KEF subwoofers aren't the most reliable and you saying you've had issues doesn't fill me with much confidence sorry!
I've actually looked at and been tempted by both of these as I have struggled to locate anything within my current budget but at the moment they're out of reach. Thanks for the advice :)

Hi,

Yeah the reliability issue is due to the amount of heat generated inside a power amplifier, not just Kef, all power amps generate heat however Kef decided to place capacitors near the hottest part inside, which causes the electrolytic fluid in them to boil, so these were failing, but once components were relocated they are just as reliable as any other subwoofer, furthermore, i have never said i had problems, the modifications were done from factory to prevent this damage

as reviews go, a lot of major websites are paid for reviews..... need i say more. Better off hearing things with your own ears, reviews are more important when you want to learn about features on something a little more complicated than a pretty simple sub woofer.

Other than the reliability mentioned above, Kef subs are excellent in comparison to anything you will likely get for 100 notes

Anyway, good luck with your search!
