i am not sure if this interests you but i have a hand knitted blanket/shawl/throw. it is quite big in size too. was given for my kid but i have never used it. it has mixtures of light wool colours. if u r interested in buying i can put pics.

If you must knit, only do a shawl or cardigan...i found the hand knitted ones never fit well.
Don't knit booties & gloves... total waste of time & effort IMO

Oh and hope the baby does not come out in a rash like mine did when she wore wool.

Congratulations on your 1st grandchild, I love hand knitted cardi's on babies upto 6 months, my mum knitted loads for my son 17yrs ago, really missed her when my dd was born last Oct, but managed to get a few lovely ones off here, I know my mum felt as if she was really part of my pregnancy and her grandson by doing practical things, she also kniited various figures that patterns were available for, good luck!!
