I am looking to buy a canon 1000d SLR to help me with an upcoming photography course.

Preferably with a lens (IS if possible) but flexible if this isn't possible. Memory cards aren't an issue although I will require all the leads.

Will consider other Canon D-SLRs (40D/450D etc.) although being a student this is dependent on price.

To be honest there is nothing really stopping me from getting a Nikon it's just that I am accustomed to Canons having used friend's cameras. Could you advise me which is the budget Nikon SLR please?

I've got the D3000 nikon, you can pick it up pretty cheap these days

Found that they were still a little more expensive than the 1000d and the lack of live view and CCD rather than CMOS sensor put me off a bit.

How are you finding the D3000, maybe I should give it more of a look?

I find it good, does everything I need to do.
Get the VR lens if you go that route.

Also perhaps consider an older nikon DSR.

Don't go for the D3000, you'll find yourself wanting to upgrade pretty quick. Either make the jump for the D3100 (a far, far better camera) which is most likely way out of your price range however. Personally I would check Gumtree/eBay and take a look for an old D40/x/D60 or an even older semi-pro DSLR
