look at the b&q hot deals thread, there are massive savings on kits at the moment but you will have to be quick
about £50 for a 4 camera system
banned#3
i have checked out all my local stores but there is nothing there.... im going to try mk this afternoon though. it was that price that made me think about getting it
#4
you may be better of with a dvr card and a camera, conect it to a pc then and you can save set it up for loads, you wil be able to get a better camera, with decent night quality also. you can pick one up on ebay for £40 then another £10 for a card. the software you can get free.
banned#5
i have thought about that and also just getting a camera and tripod. the pc one does sound better as i can get a really good camera. the thing is i aint great at all the techie stuff do you think you could link me to the stuff you are suggesting ? thanks
#6
if you type dvr card on ebay you will see loads, they just slot into a slot in your pc, here is an example of software available

http://www.nchsoftware.com/surveillance/index.html#102

you wont really need to be techie(for general recording etc anyway,), you only need camera/s the card and the software.
#7
That surveillance software is great, I've just downloaded it and hooked up my webcam with a usb extension lead and now I'm watching (and shouting) at my 2 daughters in the living room while I'm in my office! Can also record their misbehaviour to show their mum when she comes home.

Bought a setup for aroynd £150 that works on motion sensor, if there's movement it either takes 5 pictures in a go or 10 seconds of video, and will keep going, takes a 2gig sd card which lasts around a month and when its full it over-rights earlier content.

will try and find the ebay seller tomorrow thats sell the cctv unit, its very small and no minitor is needed once its been setup.

i bought a night vision camera (sony lense) from a ebay seller in hong kong.

If you get a physical DVR PCI/ISA card make sure you record at a decent frame rate e.g. 25fps. Some Cards display at a high speed but record (or worse dont bother to record if you have multiple cameras!!).

All the DVR cards for sale in China/HK are generally copies e.g PICO2000 and DVRNET which should realyl retail for a couple £100 just for the software!

Dont know about the hardware DVR device which takes SD as above - but be careful with DVR PCI/ISA cards. Also check the cameras etc from HK as some are rated as waterproof when really they just have plumbers tape around the case thread inside!

I have a setup for about £100 which has 4 x cameras recording into a pc with 500gb hard drive and motion sensors at 25fps - this is after my original system failed to record due to it being a ebay cheapo DVR card for £20 (which you now find at computer fairs!) - good luck

fozzy17 any chance you could post a night pic ?

i have a spare 4gb sd will that work ?

this is the other option that some one on mse has okayed. minus the HDD as it is to expensive

http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=574398

which is just under £200.

Hi
i will try and put a picture up later as im a little busy atm.

any night vision camera will do, try and get a decent one with a sony lens like i did, 2gb is the max the unit will take, the company above will supply everything but you will pay more, depend if you want the hassle of finding different suppliers.

my brother has a time lapse vcr recorder which will record 24hrs on one tape and also a 16 channel multiplexer, so you can connect upto 16 camera's to it and record then through the vcr. he took it off his house a few weeks ago to replace with a 160gb hdd recorder and got some new camera's too. he still has it so will ask if he is still selling it.

i needed one of these as my car got broken into the other week.I phoned around some of the B&Q stores and found one in bury going to pick it up this afternoon:)for £49.99.When i phoned Blackburn they said that they went down to £20.00 but i have to pay 49 never mind great deal anyway thanks to whoever found this deal:thumbsup: .

when the sensor is activated does this slow the computer down and how much space does it use?

what spec should be for the computer?

i am also looking for a system that is either motion detected or records all the time for long periods.
and either link it to pc or seperate pc/recording device
#19
Replied to a PM - thought this might be useful to others as well.

specifically hotorwhat -
Most motion sensing cameras simply compare the picture and if there is a slight change they record and you can define how long for. This doesnt slow your PC down.

Computer spec depends on the card - I have mine on a P4 3ghz, XP and an ATI 256mp AGP card with a 500gb HD and it loves it.

Just beware the fps recording, as most sellers quote combined fps e.g. 200fps card with 16 channels = 200/16=12.5fps ... try to go for a card/software that allows defining of FPS and as high as possible.

I used PICO2000 and would recommend you burn it if you come across it.. DVRNET is much better as software however it doesnt allow selective deletion.. works by overwriting only and it takes a while to export captured video as AVI.

Also most DVR cards on the market allow for extras e.g. Audio recording, Pan tilt and Zoom, Hardware Motion detection, Motion camera (so it follows a person), Alarms to notify you, Alerts if wires cut etc. all these however need to match to a specific type of camera Kit - all of which then moves into the thousands of pounds range..

you can get a decent DVR PCI card for around £50, a decent camera with IR, 8mm lens, Waterproof for around £80 (online) cheaper on ebay but riskier!

========================
GENERAL ADVICE

If buying from Ebay make sure the camera is a SONY HAD, ideally go for a 1/3" not a 1/4" system as the picture will be sharper.

Also go for the most resolution lines e.g. 420 (or above) instead of 380. Also make sure the camera is a CCD instead of CMOS (which is poor).

Make sure the camera if used outdoors is waterproof with an IP66/67 rating be careful tho as some ebay sellers sell indoors ones with some plumbing tape on the case... :/ (I had a shock when i opened one after it started getting cloudy inside).

Id recommend a company called RF concepts which is in Ireland and a chap called Billy he knows his stuff and is very helpful.

Also if you are buying a camera make sure it has a sun shield, as the sun will damage cameras. ideally place it where it wont get direct sun into the lens.

When selecting a camera - get one with a lens size that suits your needs. A 4mm lens will give you wide angle but no definition e.g. you cant get car reg numbers but youll get your driveway all in.
8mm will give a 2x closer image but you will lose the wide angle view.
12mm will probably allow you to read car reg plates at 10-15 yards but it will be tunnel vision view(very narrow).

If using at night make sure you have enough IR leds on the camera and they will adequately illuminate the area to view at night.

Camera will be B&W at night and colour in the day. You will need the specified power supply todrive the LEDs properly so make sure it matches the camera. Check the LEDs distance to make sure they can illuminate the area you want e.g 30metres etc (should say on camera).

There are 2x different types of LEDs the main difference is you can see one type (it glows red at night) due to wavelengths and you cant see the other - doesnt make a difference i think!. in fact its cool that they can see the light as the theiving chavs wont go near your property hopefully.

If you use a PC to record via a DVR card, you should invest in the most decent card you can afford. I bought a £10 one and it didnt record when it needed to e.g a tornado which it missed by not recording!!..

Make sure the card you get works with your operating system, you have at least 500gb to record 2xmonths worth of motion recording (on 4 x cameras) and most DVR cards need a Intel CPU with a decent video card e.g. ATI 256mb RAM.

Another thing to note if something should happen e.g a crime, the police may seize your PC so try to use a PC which you can afford to be without for at least 2 months!..

In CCTV terms, the general idea is to have a wide angle lens for all your front driveway, then use a 12mm to get detail on a pathway to get the face or on the road to get a reg. and test to make sure its recording. That way you actuallyhave hard evidence and canmake out who/what car it is. Worst thing is to have a CCTV that records but you cant make out the reg.. the police are useless and wont be any help - you have to make their life as easy as possible for them to be able to reach their targets!

Good luck!

Hi,
I am interested too - i bought one off ebay about a year ago -just plugs into wall socket and the small transmitter goes into the red, yellow and white sockets on video recorder (double length tapes as no idea how to use it any other way.)
It has a small ariel on the transmitter box -pic is ok in day and terrible at night -cant make anything out ! any suggestions and being a bit dense in these matters - how does the dvs box with SD card work ?
Thanks

it just stores the video or pictures in the sd card when the motion sensor is triggered, you can either have 5 pictures taken in a row or a 10 second video clip, it will keep doing this until the motion sensor stops picking things up, it will keep storing videos until the card is full, then it will overwrite you first pictures or video that are on your card, a 2 gb card is around a month, no need to take it out though as you just let it overwrite your old stuff.
#24
do you need this and the vhs then ?
#25
all you need is the black box above a lead and a external camera, all can be had for around £110 or less depending on camera you use, you will need a lcd or television just to set it up (sensitivity and where is aimed) then thats it, you flick a switch before you go to bed or leave it on, if you want to view the nights recordings for any reason you take out sd card and plug it into a card reader on your pc and view them that way, you can then print them aswell if you like, im trying to upload night pictures but photobucket wont let me for some reason tonight, will try tomorrow night.
#26
i do have a camera -but the night pic is **** -do you think i need a new one -or is there any way of rectifying it . Tried the ariel on the box/transmitter thing (in above post ) but still **** and interference ! daytime is fine !
#27
i suppose its down to the quality of the camera, but most night vision footage is not great, im lucky as my car is under a lampost.
#28
Mines just in front of front gate -approx 3 yards-i could leave my outside light on and try that -never thought of trying that !!!!
