Wanted: Desktop 500w+ quiet/silent psu £20.00

Just upgraded my dell inspiron 531 desktop to a dedicated gfx card and the 300w psu is having problems and takes 60 seconds just to show the dell splash screen so I am putting it down to the gfx upgrade as not enough power.

Anyone got an half decent 500w one the no longer use? The one in now is very quiet unbelievablly so want a near silent one.

Anyone got something suitable? Really needs to have atleast 2 sata power connectors or molex adapters.

What about taking the graphic card back and replacing it with one that runs on a 300w PSU.
I have a PNY GT220 graphic card running on a 300 watt PSU with no problem ,may want to check it out you can get them from pc world ( i know its not the best but it only requires a 300 w PSU) you need a minimum 12V current rating of 18A
check it out here
http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/12149430/PNY-Verto-Geforce-GT220-1GB-PCI-Express-2-0-Graphics-Card/Product.html

it plays World of Warcraft at 60 fps no problem , don't know what you need it for but i just found it easier than replacing the PSU.

hope it helps out

to be honest I do not even though what I need apart from wanting it quiet or silent and needing more than 450w and 2 sata. The 300w one cant handle this gfx card which says 400w min.

Just want it to remain as quiet as it is now as just cant hear it. I was gonna buy this one - http://www.amazon.co.uk/OCZ-500W-StealthXStream-Power-Supply/dp/B001564SRE
But its prob a lot more than I want to pay really.

How old is the ezcool and has it had a hard life and just how quiet is it?

The ezcool isnt very old, no it hasnt had a hard life, it has just been powering a e4500 cpu and mobo, on board graphics, nothing heavy.
It is pretty quiet, ezcool advertise them being quiet.

The OCZ are great psu's, but then again £22 more expensive.

Its entirely up to you.
If interestd, I can get this posted monday morning

Let me know

The first review said it was not quiet unless fans turned down. How quiet are they and how are fans turned down? Cant find price comparisons for it either, is it an old model?
#14
Yes they are an older model a crossover between the latest ones and the older standard ATX.
As far as noise are concerned its subjective, I would class them as quite, if memory serves they will increase speed automatically if the PSU gets to hot.
The fan is adjusted by the rotary pot by the power switch.

Sounds ok if the fans can be turned down low but more than I want to pay for one without a warranty.

Thanks anyway.

I also have a goodmans 17 inch tft with built in speakers in silver if anyone fancies that as a trade.

This is silent mate.
After postage im left with ****** all.
Its gotta be £15.
Its a bargain as it is.
your current 300w, will be working its tits off, thus making it be louder.
Thus you need a more wattage like this, and all should be okay.
Let me know, can get posted tomorrow

Not read good things about cheap psu's though it will be cheap as chips whats in it now anyhow. Common sense tells me to buy a new more expensive branded one but my tight ass nature says get cheap lol. Would not mind but I sold a qt tech silent psu for next to nowt last year as did not have a desktop:x
Plus I only need it to up the power for gfx support and if you say its silent I will take it.
How you want payment?

Bank Transfer mate.

Its not just the PSU, you have to take into consideration your case, how big/small your case is.
The number of fans in your case.

Like ive got a Cooler Master Wavemaster case for sale, they are extremely silent cases, come with 3 coolermaster fans in, but say if you buy a cheap £10 case, and same components, the coolermaster case will be quieter each time.

The advice is dont skimp on a psu.
BUT..

Ive used these ezcool psu's, and I think they are fab, got a 600w one in the family pc and its great.
Of course you can get quieter psu's if you pay more.. But.. that is not always the case, this psu is pretty quiet, I have seen alot noisier psu's of good brands than this.. But money is always an issue isnt it.

These ezcool psu's IMO are like a brand, but havent been identified as a high spec brand, but are much better than a standard say winpower or whatever.

If you wish to proceed, apologies for the essay.
Then drop me a pm :)

And if you want a case, im sure we could sort something out..

To be honest I only paid 75 quid for the dell insp 531 which was a bargain and just upgraded it a little and it gets 5.1 in win 7 rating and its more than quick enough for my needs. The dell is pretty much silent which surprised me too.

So I reckon 15 quid is enough to pay for a psu and should fix the slow boot prob as it just does nothing for 60 seconds with light on. It did not do it before it put the gfx in. With not messing with desktops for some time I never gave the psu a second thought and just bougt a gfx card for 40 quid which was enough for my needs.

Not got anything molex inside either as all sata. Not got 2 sata adapter going spare have you just incase I put another hd in?

I will take it mate and if it turns out noisey I can always sell on and buy another:thumbsup:

Pm on way.

Thanks Hamm it arrived an hour ago.

Can't use it though as its so noisey compared to what was in and cant cope with it at all. Nowhere near silent or quiet for that matter. Plus it has not solved my problem of slow boot so nothing to do with psu at all, maybe something to do with the dell not liking the gfx card, may have to revert back to onboard or live with the slow post speed.

You must be used to much noisier psu's than me to think its near silent mate, never mind looks like its somthing for the old pc bits box in the loft!:p

Hello mate,
Apologies on this.
I must be used to noisy pc's then lol.
I can't think what it could be now? Try it with 1 memory stick, or a change of that?
Try clearing the cmos?
Is it all properly connected to the mobo, the case wires?

Deffo noisey mate. The one in is almost silent so may as well leave in until it dies. Iwill go back to my original plan and buy new now and make sure it is deffo silent. Gonna cost me more now in the long run and it just dont pay go get used sometimes as you may have bad hearing compared to mine etc.

So I am £16.25 out of pocket and it was not even the psu causing it. I have done some reading and the system does suffer from slow post apparently but its even longer with the new gfx in. works fine once on though. The offical dell latest bios dont work either and dell have not bothered to fix. It just dont run at all in windows and there is no dos/floppy alternative etc.

May be just as easy to buy a new am2 mb as they are not expensive.

Anyone want to buy a nearly quiet not so silent psu lol:whistling:

If your problems started when you fitted the graphics card, have you checked the BIOS to see if you can turn off any on board graphics. (assuming this is the way you upgraded)

Also I have noticed that if you have a PATA DVD drive windows will check this during boot, my old one would spend 20 seconds doing this, this may also be an option you can alter in your BIOS.
Worth a quick check anyway.

I'd look at your bios aswell, and also a refund from Hamm, he did state is was near silent, which is obviously wrong.

First thing I did was select pci-e gfx and it also does not give option of onboard with pci-e installed it just goes from the list. I made sure first device to look for was pci-e and not pci. No pata dives at all, my dvdr and hd are both sata. I also have first boot set to hd.

Tried it with all devices removed apart from hd and still same. Around 60 seconds before the beep and dell splash screen. It is about 10 seconds with gfx removed which is still slow but a know problem with the del inspiron 531.

Works fine once on just a little slow. I would like to put the latest bios on but the dell installer dont work and they dont seem to be botherd to fix it! It just extracts a file called winflash.sys rather than running as it should.

Are you sure there is not another file to load the winflash one, Dell and other manufactures use this method of updating the BIOS from under windows, so you can't do it from DOS and get around there BIOS crippling.

Have a read, others have same problem but no sign of a fix. Tried the older versions of the bios with same effect too.

Do you know the motherboard manufacturer, they might have a BIOS but if you were to do this you would almost certainly loose the ability to run your OS if it is the Dell one, as part of the software licence is in the BIOS.
Possible the best thing to do is put up with it, this can be one of the draw backs of buying a pre-built machine.
If you want to get some info on your BIOS try using a program called Lavalys Everest, I think you can use it without registering for a while.

No warranty anyhow and not running original OS either. Only paid 50 quid for it otherwise I would have built my own. Asus make the mb but do not support it, only dell. The dell bios updater just does not work. I may get a am2 mb later on but will probably just live with it.

The 300w psu is staying in as it's silent compared to the so called silent one I just bought, how the company can actually call it silent on the label is beyond me!. It will probably die sooner or later though as the gfx card wants 400w min!
#39
Looks like the best thing to do is just live with it, for now at least. Do you need the graphics card or could you live with the on board, have you tried an alternative card thinking of say an ATI 4350 but you would need to try one with splashing out any more money.

Its not a big issue to be honest. I just assumed as the gfx needed more power that it was the psu at fault which now I know it was not. Just a shame I wasted money on a psu especially as I cant even use it. If it had been silent like I originally stated it would have stayed in but hay ho as they say!
