Hi

I had this problem a few months ago. You should be aware that this will not work if your monitor is DVI-D. It must be DVI-A or DVI-I.

Take a look at http://www.telly-leads.co.uk/hdmi-dvi.htm#FAQs for more information. You will need to scroll almost all the way down.

Turns out I have a DVI-D connection on my monitor...

Why is it that it will not work with an adapter?

I need to use the DVI port for my PC so that my VGA port is free for my 360...

what can I do now?

What about that?

VGA end into your PC. DVI end into a DVI cable which also plugs into your monitor...

DVI-D only takes a digital signal, a VGA even with a VGA-DVI converter is still analogue.

Don't think you can do it i'm sorry to say.
#8
The link you gave above works the opposite way.

DVI from the pc to VGA on the monitor.
#9
You require a VGA to DVI-D converter and not an adapter

http://www.nti1.co.uk/vga-dvi.html

Any converter will have a maximum resolution and the model in the link is 1280x1024 max.

I can't see the required converter being cheap and I don't know how expensive your graphics card is but I would look into getting one that outputs DVI-D.

:| - I want to run my PC at 1680x1050...

I think I may have to buy a new graphics card with a DVI-D connection - can anyone recommend one - I use my PC for emails, internet, videos/movies, word processing and a little gaming - The only PC games I own are MOH, COD2 and Theme Hospital and I am a console gamer pretty much...

If my PC can just use the DVI port it frees up my VGA port for my 360 that I intend to purchase...

I guess at the moment you are just swapping the VGA cable at the back of the monitor which would be a pain.

One cheap method would be to buy a VGA extension cable M-F to save messing around at the back of the monitor.

Or you could use something like this trendy looking thing

No way, the ghosting is bloody awful on them things.
#14
Ok, scratch that idea.

New graphics card looks to be the way to go.

How much am I looking at for a new graphics card that has a DVI connection?

Is a 64mb card sufficient?
#16
I think you will struggle to find a modern graphics card that doesn't have DVI.

Pick a budget and decide if you want to do much gaming on it.

My budget is as little as possible - £20-30 ideally...

As I would be using my monitor as a 360 screen, I'd very rarely use my PC for gaming... Maybe the odd game of Theme Hospital or CM... (Which I'd happily not do if it meant I could use my 360 with the monitor)

I'd watch my DVD's through my 360 as well but I do have a lot of videos on my PC that I would like to play through my PC, would I need a good graphics card for that?

(I'm really out of touch with this side of computing - thanks for your continued suport)

Do you know whether your pc has a Pci-express interface or AGP?

This would play theme hospital and CM easily. and be fine for watching vids and general internet use, but would curl up and die if you asked it to run a modern game. That's assuming your pc is reasonably new and has pci express.

I believe it has PCI Express 16x and is fairly new (1GB RAM, 3.2 GHz) - The only thing it is missing is a DVI output...

Would something like this do the job?

linky

then use a DVI-D-DVI-D cable to connect it together?

hi barbour, no that one you linked to is AGP and not PCI-E...the one bobbajob posted is something along the lines of what you need. I have an ATI Radeon X600 spare that i keep meaning to put up on fleaBay (since installing a new card 4 months ago) barely used i can sell you for £30 if ur interested. You prob wont get anything better than that for the price. Just a thought ;-)

I'm running an ATi Radeon X600 now, only it doesn't have a DVI output :(

£30 is perhaps a little more than I would be looking to spend - but can you send me the specs of it and I'll get back to you...
