I have a DELL XP professional disc/booklet. This as long as it is installed on a Dell PC should not need a licence key of which 1 is NOT supplied as standard from Dell. Looking for £50

I might be wrong (often am) but Dell do provide licence keys stuck to the PC?

The disc itself will install Xp but youll still be prompted for a key.

I also have a spare disk & booklet for Xp Pro but would be reluctant to sell them as a full working copy without a licence key.

I've installed many a Dell XP on older systems (P3 & P2) & they do not ask for a licence key & as a result activate themselves too. I don't know what is clever about Dell's that enable this feature but all know it works (with a Dell Xp)!

Obviously times change & Dell's latest PC's designed for Vista may differ in their registration embedded code.

My other half has a genuine xp pro key .
He is the IT manager at his work so he has a corporate license.
pm me if youre interested.

Dell uses an oem activation system which is why it never asks to activate. They get a bunch of licences like a corporate version but designed to be used for single users. The CD installs the dell ID from the original licence given to dell so they can update it & prepare it for shipping. When finished they run a keychanger script to reset key to your's.

This is clear that Dell have been given a licence from Microsoft to install XP on their systems without activation, however it is not clear how the embedded code is installed on a Dell platform to recognise a Dell XP disc. It certainly is not on the HDD.

EDIT: What seems even more bizarre that this should work on PC's that were built before XP came along!

Told you I would be proven wrong.

Having said that the 2 Xp pro discs I have (which were surplus at work) do ask for a code.

Are there different kinds of discs / installations ???

yeah, got your home, pro and media editions then different service pack editions of them and then there is retail, oem, corperate versions of each

It would be against the terms of the license agreement to use a corporate key for someone who doesn't work for the company who bought it; so while the key would work, it would still be an unlicensed copy.

should work okay and I cannot see any reason why it wouldn't work, though really it is stealing.
