I want a graphics card, doesn't have to be the best.
I don't have much knowledge on graphics cards, but just good enough to play second life.
I could pay with PP gift or swap either a Nokia 3410 or Samsung E900 for it

AGP or PCIe or PCI is referance to the interface with the motherboard

What make / model of PC do you have or is it a custom built PC?

OK with the info you have provided it seems as if you require a PCIe (PCI express) graphics card :)

I just googled your card, and the prices seems to be around £14, for a 256mb, how much memory is yours?

I have a ATI X1800XT for sale should eat Second-Life 2 for breakfast, £45 inc p&p

If in doubt about which graphics cards are better than others, I tend to use:

well overpriced

Nvidia 8600gts available for £23 delivered? It comes with a special adaptor which require a spare molex connection

If you want to compare with other cards, its about the same as a 7900GT, X1950pro, hd2600xt, hd3650. Anything with higher numbers will normally be better.

If you have a PSU which isn't very good, I recommend getting a hd2600xt, hd3650 or 8600gt as they don't use much power.

...okay.

Any suggestions on price then?

£20 delivered max. Something like the x1950pro, 7900gt or 8600gts would use much less lower and perform better at the same time.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/images/video/geforce8600gts/8600gts_power.gif

The difference between 7900gt and x1800xt is huge.

is it good enough to play an online game?
what's the lowest you'll take for it? or are you interested in the phones?

Does appear that your motherboard has a PCI-E slot, but nothing worse than getting a card that's not compatible / has no available slot / will not physically fit / will not be getting enough power. Why take a chance when these are easily determined?

So first off, determine if your motherboard has a x16 PCI-E slot indeed, by running SIW (standalone), & looking under Hardware > System Slots. It should have something like this:
http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/605/siwpcieslotavailable.jpg

Next, what type of case is it? Standard width/height, or a slim-type one?

Check your PSU (open the case): the wattage & +12V figures, & the free connectors it has.

I have just had a check and this card does not seem to be able to play the game you stated which is strange.

I do have a nvidia 6600 that apparently can run this game which I can do for £17 all in

Don't forget you need a PCI-E x16 slot for most of the cards being offered.

A std PCI slot will not do, unless it's a PCI card of course - but even the best of these are quite poor.

I suppose I can go for £15 but just make sure it will fit your PC :)

£20 delivered is the lowest I can do. I'd also swap for the Samsung E900, but are there any problems? Is it unlocked? Have scratches? Could you post photos?

Could you also first open your computer and post a photo of the sticker on your power supply please. Then I can tell if my card would work properly. The card itself will play secondlife with ease.

I would prefer the swap deal because I don't need the phone.
The phones unlocked, but the keys are sticky, and is in a used condition, small crack on the surface on edge of screen, but screen unaffected.
I'll take the pictures tomorrow, pictures of the power supply inside the case?
#27
I have a 7600GT.

Much better than the 6600 but not as good as the 8600GTS.

If you have the power supply and a spare connector then go for the 8600GTS its the best offered by far.

If you don't I can do my 7600GT also for £20.

Oh okay. I'm afraid I'm not willing to swap for the phone in that case. But the £20 offer does stand. Yes pictures of the power supply inside the case.

Basically you want around 18-20 Amps on the rail which outputs at 12v. Things like the processor and graphics card draw power from this rail and therefore it has to be adequate.
#29
just a independent opinion..... go for the 8600GTS for £20, its the best offer you've had. 6600 is too slow
#30
Looking for £20

The 8600GTS is a better card and a better deal but make sure your PC can take it :)

As you can see it gives 15A(ideally wanted 18A+) on the 12v rail This means tat it can give 180w on the 12v rail. The 8600gts uses ~47w and your processor will use 50-90w depending on what it is. The PSU has 4 x molex connections and therefore you should have spare connections.

Therefore it should work. However, the company making this PSU is not reputable and therefore how reliable these figures are is a different matter. Also with age the continuous output would be lower. Its up to you but it should work.

The 7600GT someone has mentioned uses ~36w and is more likely to work (look at my previous posts showing power consumption of cards). I personally would be looking at that card now even though its half as good as the 8600gts.

Also it is unclear from your photos if you have PCI-Express x16 slots. (you need slots which are PCI-Express x4 and above)

Please install this http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpuz/cpuz_151_setup.exe

and then put up a pitcure of the mainboard tab

Heres mine for example http://dl-client.getdropbox.com/u/20407/cpuz.jpg

#35
Well its not PCIe you want its AGP (or PCI), which none of the cards on offer are.
#36
I think cpu-z is reading it wrong.

http://www.via.com.tw/en/images/products/chipsets/p4-series/p4m900_blkdiagram.jpg

P4M900 chipset doesnt have AGP capabilities. CPU-Z I think is looking at the connection of the integrated graphics (current graphics device being used) which it is reading as an AGP connection.

Please install this and get the correct informationhttp://www.cpuid.com/download/pcw2008_v1871.exe

For example,

just open your case, look on google for what a pci x16 slot looks like (normally the motherboard has it printed PCI EXPRESS Right bloody next to it, then, either get a better psu if you want a card thats gonna be able to play crisis, if you want to just play the odd game of manipulate images, abit of video editing etc etc etc etc, just get something like the 4670 which is EXTREME bang for your buck, uses little power, DOES NOT need any wiring up, runs completely off the pci x16 power no wires etc, and its cheap! i've seen people play crisis on high with that card, and its amazing. theres the Asus one with the onboard hdmi, http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?ASU-4670 However you can get it much cheaper than that.
