I have an old desktop working as an XBMC HTPC with an LGA775 board and a celeron processor. I think it might be worth upgrading if I could get hold of a reasonably priced old but better CPU that fits the board and PSU specs.
My board should support any of the following -
Core 2 Quad Q6600
Core 2 Quad Q8200
Core 2 Quad Q8200
Core 2 Quad Q8200S
Core 2 Quad Q8300
Core 2 Quad Q8400
Core 2 Quad Q8400S
Core 2 Quad Q9300
Core 2 Quad Q9300
Core 2 Quad Q9400
Core 2 Quad Q9400S
Core 2 Quad Q9450
Core 2 Quad Q9505
Core 2 Quad Q9550
Core 2 Quad Q9550
Core 2 Quad Q9550S

I'm willing to go as high as £40 for a Q9550. For any lower specs, please name your price.

Updated the list of required CPUs as below. With some good advice and comparisons to my current processor, anything below these might not be worth the trouble -

Core 2 Quad Q9400S
Core 2 Quad Q9450
Core 2 Quad Q9505
Core 2 Quad Q9550
Core 2 Quad Q9550
Core 2 Quad Q9550S

CEX are surprisingly competitive for these.

Thanks for the tip. Just checked they are selling 9550 for £50 and 9650 for £85. I'll wait in this thread for a couple of days and then go to them for something that matches my expectation.

Yeah I had to upgrade an old lga775 last week. For some of them they destroy eBay prices. You can save £2.50 postage if your local store has them. Make sure they give u exactly what u want as some staff are clueless. I'm also pretty sire you get a 1 year warranty too. For what it's worth :)

I've got a Xeon x3220 which is LGA 775.

Thanks but my current Celeron seems newer and equivalent if not better than Xeon.

Thanks again.

That Xeon is the same as a Q6600 mate. Should be fine if the price is right.

Just checked for comparisons and I think you are right. Only marginally better than e3300. I'll edit my requirements and move the baseline a bit higher. Thanks.

Thanks mate but as per above seems like q6600 is too close to my current CPU. I'll remove that from my list and sorry for the trouble.
