Don't mind the size, would rather buy a small one for cheap to check with than be stuck with a big one I don't need. As long as it's enough to whack XP or something small (windows 95?) on there I don't mind, so possibly even under a gb if thats possible?
Must be in full working condition obviously, just a standard laptop HD (2.5" ATA) I believe
As cheap as possible, let me know what you have
thanks

I put XP on two laptops the other day it took around 2.5GB on each.

What errors have you been getting?

I just need some kind of OS on there to check what the problem is.
XP pro performance edition is only 250mb in iso, so can't be much more installed?? unless iso's are compressed? im not sure.
Ive been getting errors trying to sync, missing or bad block errors, any windows installation cd or repair cd i put it in fails trying to format anything, i did some SMART diagnostics and one test passed but one failed. I also memtested the ram for 16 passes and that wasn't the problem. It runs fine from linux live cd's so im pretty sure it must be the HD or at least some kind of Hd connected circuitry inside.

I wouldn't bother trying to fit xp (including any lite version) on any less than a 4GB drive tbh.

Im not looking for a long term solution, just to check whether it will format and at least begin to install on the drive, then I will know the drive is the problem and I can buy a new large one.
I just need one to test with.

Ah interesting didn't think about cex.
Bit on the pricey side but I was thinking about selling them some stuff soon anyway so that may come in handy.
thanks

Why don't you buy an adapter and test the laptop hard drive in a desktop PC. They're only a couple of quid and you'll be able to use a formatting utility from windows to format that HDD.

download and burn a live linux cd with drive testing tools, like hiren's boot cd.

I've put 'tinyXP' on a 2GB partition with about 500MB left. It leaves out useless printer drivers, windows media player, IE and lots else.
