When I say light I mean LIGHT

Must be under 1kg in weight, must have a FULL qwerty keyboard (thumb keyboard will not do) must have at least 512MB RAM a 20GB HDD / SSD and also a semi-decent processor. Must be wireless enabled.

MUST support a Windows OS (I looked at the Asus EEE but cant do what I want on Linux)

Ive just sold my UMPC so it will be replacing this.

Preferable options are:

Tosh Libretto U100
Tosh Portege R500

Something along these lines, small, compact, light, wireless

Anyone got anything? Or know somewhere not overly expensive (around £500)

morning bump.

In fact if anyone could through some other models at me too please it would be helpful

Thanks :)
Greetings, it should be noted that the EeePC does support windows XP and even Windows Vista, it even supports mac OSX.

While out of the box it comes with linux you can install any varient of the windows operating system.

Ontop of this the EeePC meets all your specifications except the SSD space. The fix however is that compact flash support or SD is supported and you can simply throw in an 8GB card.

From what iv'e seen on youtube the EeePC is actually very quick and if you were to aquire a stripped down version of XP (see: Gamers Edition) it would be sure to run even faster.

Hope this helps,
Hey Danny,

many thanks, I've been looking into the EEE for some months now (on its forum etc) it looks pretty tough to do so though, I might give it a try .... any links for the gamers edition of XP?

Does anyone know if asus will be released an 8gb / 16gb version of the EEE at all?
8gb is on its way apparently, don't forget you can add extra storage with a memory card too.

Also, let us know what it is that you want to do. You never know, you might be surprised by what you can do with Linux.
EEE with 8GB SSD with 1Gb Ram is on the way
Well primarily it will be for browsing (which I know linux will support)
But Id also like to do:

Instant Messaging,
Outlook / Email client,
Possibly one or two old school games International Cricket Caption / Championship Manager (01/02)
Remote desktoping

Those are the main functions to be honest, does anyone know the release date of the 8gb with 1gb RAM? will it comes with XP preloaded or the same as the 4gb? estimated cost?
I've STILL got a panasonic Toughbook for sale!! See Here
Hey bazz I remember thanks buts its weigh too heavy for me at 2.1kg's ... im looking for something 1kg and under...

thanks anyway

Hello again bluestreak, i will be PM'ing you shortly with the information you desire. Also, as others have stated, an 8GB version is soon about to ship.

To make the Eeepc seem a little more desirable, the gamer edition of XP takes up around 300mb, normally an install is around 3GB+, so thats another 2 and a half gig you've saved for your files already.

I was tempted to get one, the only thing stopping me was the screen resolution, 1024 would have been more preferable, but for your needs this is perfect.
Ok, lets have a look and see if Linux might do for you...

web browsing: yup, you already know
instant messaging: yup, every IM I know of supported nicely by pidgeon (which I use)
email client: Evolution or thunderbird are excellent clients. Evolution is probably most like outlook. I don't think you would be dissapointed.
Remote desktop: yup, both VNC and windows remote desktop can be done nicely
Games: This might be a problem : ) There are a lot of good older or older-styled games for Linux but those specific ones you probably can't play. Don't forget online games in flash etc will also be playable.

I'd say its going to come down to the games really so its up to you. I'd say Linux will cover anything else you want to do. Just so you know... I run Ubuntu linux on both my laptop and desktop... I have no Windows anywhere any more!
Cheers apocralypse, I knew linux would be powerful enough to run most of those apps in its own form at the very elast, I suppose I was just a bit scared of change from the norm and a little worried about the lack of storage space, but for the price I suppose its worth it.

I work in IT so I guess I need to get into the linux world at some point, somewhere nice and easy to start eh ... Now the big question 4g or 8g PC701 mmmm
The question is where to find stock
Bought the Asus EEE PC701 4G today from Micro Anvika in Kingston they had 1 more in stock (white only)

Many thanks to all who helped ! I may or may not try putting xp on it depending how much I want to game when mobile!
Was it £219.99?
yep £219.99 exactly :)
