Looking for a low cost dual drive NAS solution for backing up my stuff, and eventually streaming movies

I think I'm after an HP Microserver with a boot drive plus 2 HDDs in raid (2tb each or higher)

Having an OS preinstalled would be preferred but I could probably deal with that myself.

This is to replace an unreliable buffalo linkstation which spends more time switching itself off than doing anything useful, and I'm getting on edge about my lack of regular backups :(

Other raid nas solutions would be considered, but I think a Microserver would be the most flexible for my current and future needs

Thanks

I've got an HP N40L Microserver with 2GB of Ram (Single Stick)

Would be looking for £75inc P&P for it without any drives or £175inc P&P with 2x 3TB HDDs

I had it filled with 3TB drives and was running the Synology (XPEnology) NAS software on it which runs off a USB memory stick which makes use of the interal USB drive.

If purchased for the asking price I would be happy to include a memory stick and set it all up for you.

I have a mid tower file server PC with 4TB of drives, i5 quad core with 8 GB DDR3 RAM and an ATI 5350 passively cooled GPU. It is very quiet and would handle streaming easily. £230

Thanks for the offer, good price but I need a small unit to sit under or near my TV unit, so it's gotta be a Microserver or nas unit

What make model are the HDD's, and how old are they?

They are western digital green drives, I will need to confirm the age when I've got them to hand.

Thanks,
Michael

Hey Michael, thanks for the reply.

Having done a bit of Googling I've read that the reliability of 3tb drives might be questionable so am a bit unsure about these. Don't suppose you have other drives in 2tb sizes?

How do you mean the reliability of the 3TB drives might be questionable? Do you mean while used with the microserver or in general?

I'm not aware of any issues with either and have not had any issues at all with them.

I don't have any 2TB drives, only have 3TB drives and a single 1TB drive.
#8
Yeah I guess they should be ok, but I read a few articles about 3tb drives which were a slight concern!

Anyway, Sorry to have to backtrack, but I'm gonna need to put this on the back burner anyway, as our washing machine decided to break at the weekend, can't be fixed, and I need a new one :(
#9
Ok no worries, let me know when your on the hunt again and I will advise if its still available.
#10
Back on the lookout!

Anyone got a Microserver available?
#11
Mine is still available.

Thanks,
Michael

Fantastic. Did you ever look into the age of the HDDs? Also, how old is the server?
#13
Age wise of the Microserver I'm not sure but I would guess about 3 to 4 years, I've tried looking up the serial number with HP but it does not display any details.

I've just looked at three of the hard drives and one is dated 2010 one 2011 and the other is 2012, they are all WD Green 3TB Drives.

Thanks. Almost there! I forgot to ask... Have the 3tb hard drives been tested and scanned for errors and SMART health status?

Yes they have been checked and are error free. I will post some screenshots of the health at some point.

I have a Microserver (N40L) I've been looking to get rid of. It will come without any drives besides the included 250GB drive. 2 caveats:
1. The esata port was damaged so I have a card installed which adds an additional 2 sata ports. The card will be included.
2. I have misplaced the keys to the server. I'm sure a local locksmith will be able to make a pair for you.

I'm looking for £50+ P&P which I can arrange or you can.

I can obviously send photos and other info as required.

Hi, have you had a chance to get any screenshots? Thanks

I have a N54L sitting under my desk not doing anything. Moved everything onto an esxi box, so its surplus to requirements.

4gig RAM, 320Gig HDD in the 5th SATA slot, Radeon HD6350 and a PCIe Wifi Card. Its running FreeNAS right now, but was previously running Server 2012 for me. Has all the keys and extra screws etc

No extra drives though, as they all got moved into my new box.

No idea what its worth, maybe £65 plus what ever postage is? (unless you are near Swansea)

How old is it? I take it its in full working order and good physical condition?

Cheers

Just pulled up the receipt from my email, its an NL40L not a N54L which I got from Amazon on 20/11/2012.

Don't really know what to say about it, it does what a Microserver does best. Been sitting in a cupboard since the day I bought it running with no problems. Its only really been powered down to install the GPU/RAM/Wifi and then when we moved house.

Its condition is great, has all the extra screws and the little allen key tool, both keys and obviously all 4 HDD caddies. Like I said I already installed FreeNAS on it.

I had a SSD and 4 x 2Tb HDDs in it, but as they've gone into my new esxi build i've just put a spare 320gig 3.5" HDD in it to sell it. This drive is mounted above the caddies in the 5.25" bay.

If you are interested would be happy to take some pictures/screenshots/SMART test in the morning.

Sorry, will get this sorted tomorrow for you.

Thanks

Scottee and themanwithapc, still considering yours, but would prefer a unit that comes with disks so just waiting to see if the other one will suit.

Thanks all

Sorry for the delay, the oldest drive (2010 dated has some reallocated sectors, the other two are fine and details below:

I assume its just the two drives your looking for?
