Hey, can I recommend you ignore the "official Sony HDMI" cable thing. An HDMI cable is an HDMI cable. They either work or they don't (they carry a digital signal and thus there is no such thing as quality really, just different specifications.

You can get a version 1.4 HDMI cable delivered from eBay for about £1.80, which is what i'd recommend you do :-) It will work fine on your PS3.

Good luck, and I hope this helps :-)

Thanks for the advice, but I have a problem with my current (cheap ebay special) cable, so although I have a couple of other cables to try out, I thought it is also a good time to invest in an official cable so Sony can't turn around and dismiss any warranty claims that I may have to make in case swapping cables does not work.

You won't invalidate any warrenty by using a third party cable. I promise you there is no need for you to waste your money. Try a different HDMI cable, and if whatever problem you have still exists, you are CERTAIN it's either the PS3 or the television itself. As I say, there is no real difference in "quality of cable" unless you're talking about using a 20+ meter cable!

I assume that is the official sony one?

I've just told the guy he can get a 2m new cable delivered for £1.99 from ebay - why on earth would he buy from someone like you trying to profiteer?

Guys, guys... I know all about HDMI cables, and I know a £1 cable can work exactly like a £100 cable (except for longer lengths). However, I am just trying to pre-empt the fact that I may have a problem with my TV (I already know the PS3 can do 1080p as I've had it working at my parents on their TV). And since the TV is a new Bravia, and since Sony are likely going to try to fob me off for not using an official cable I would like to prevent that. I may not need it after all if I try swapping them later today, but on the off chance someone is offering one, I thought I would ask here.

Hmm, I understand your point OP - but will the cable actually say "Sony" on it? You may find an identical looking cable for a couple of quid and if so just get that, as IF Sony wanted you to prove you were using their cable, they would probably want a proof of purchase receipt anyway, which you wouldn't get from here!

The official Sony HDMI cable, the one that came with some of the original PS3 consoles, don't say Sony on them at all so I think that might defy the point.

Sony do produce their own HDMI cables, they're flat with gold-plated connectors. While pricier, I tend to prefer them to the cheapo ones & use them across a few devices without any issues whatsoever including PS3, WDTV & audio system. They're also slightly tidier and funkier looking.

Well, the good news is that I swapped it with one of my spare cables and it now works perfectly. Seems not all £1.75 cables are created equally :)
