If ur serious bout this head for nforce board and u'll need a hardware mpeg encoding board for the virgin media recording not gonna be cheap and will take some research
banned#3
AFAIK that should work and it has onboard HW enc so your comp wont have to deal with it!

SW wise get tmpgenc.. its the best

Afaik???

sorry i was getting mixed up with tuners... (i have a nova-t 500) with tuners you need to have the correct cable input to deal with non-freeview boxes.

but this takes in AV - i think they mean component and s-video. so you may need to get a scart converter (i dont know what outputs the v box has)

if you do get this box to do the encoding then get something like a mini-itx (mini-itx.com) as they are quiet and consume low power!

what does it mean?

IIRC (lol- if I remember correctly) It's just an acronym. Instead of typing 'as far as I know' you just type AFAIK. Sorry but that's about as clear as I can make it Paul.

oooh!

I thought you said afaik???? as in: "what do you mean as far as i know?? it will work with this box!"
banned#13
your very welcome!!!
banned#14
so it WILL work with this box? i think this box will be good. what software do i use?
banned#15
if you have XP then you should have no probs with this box.
if you want to encode on the box then use the software bundled with it to do that.

if you want to encode on your actual computer then use tmpgenc express 4. it really is sooooo good!
but it depends on how good your computer is too (old comp, it will take a long time to encode!)

but to actually record the file i think is done on the box. (read the manual to double check) encoding is something you do afterwards to get into a format you want. (i encode vids for my mp3player)

if you want to just play on the computer then you wont need to re-encode.. the file produced by the box will play on your computer.

encoding is also done if you want to turn it into a dvd that plays on normal dvd players. if you have a divx player then they will play .avi files (most likely this box will create .avi files when you record shows)

dont know how experienced you are with this stuff but there is loads of info on the net or post back here if you have questions!

right, i have a amd am2 4200 dual core, 8gb ram, 500gb sata drive as my main pc with vista 64bit.
my media centre (the one im using this for) is a AMD 64 3500, 2GB DDR2 ram, 250gb sata drive with windows xp.
When i connect the telewest box to this device (when i order it) what do i do to get the picture on the screen?

also, pci cards go for very cheap on ebay. I got a belkin 5 port usb 2.0 pci card for £1 + £3 delivery works great on an old PC that only had usb 1.1 before!
banned#18
ahh nice one, ebuyer have them for £4.99 each, and i thought that was cheap, may look on ebay or on here if anyone has them to give away lol
banned#19
right, the computer is more than powerful enough to do what you want.

[TV box]----composite/svideo[bigpockets recorder thingy]-----usb[computer]

i think the box connects to the computer using usb. install drivers, turn everything on and start the program bundled with the bigpockets box and press record!

i guess your telewest box conects to your TV using SCART? if it does then you need a converter something like this: http://www.hdinterconnects.com/index.php?main_page=popup_image_additional&pID=49&pic=0&products_image_large_additional=images/large/scart-comp1_LRG.gif

banned#26
just looked, you get a 3RCA to 3RCA cable with it.
banned#27
try ebay :-D

or your local market or maplin.. depends on how good a cable you want?

prob wont get one in the box. but if you have an old dvd player they used to have those cables. (the old ones did)
banned#28
do you have an old playstation or xbox? they usually have the converter:

banned#29
but be sure to get the correct direction... there are in and out types.. i would have to think about it to tell you which one you need... but some one at a shop like maplins could give you an answer! i think you need the OUT type? yeah pretty sure you need out
banned#30
the box comes with a 3RCA to 3RCA cable and i have one of those convertors with my 360, i dont use it either as i have the vga HD cable. so i just need to order this box and im sorted. cant wait till payday!!!

banned#32
i will do mate, thanks for your help, i left you some rep earlier!!
banned#33
Thanks! (how do you check rep? and what is it for?)
banned 1 Like #34
you check rep by clicking on the little pair of white scales next to your name in each post. the more rep you get off people the more little heat spots you get. to leave someone else rep, you click on the white scales next to their name and write a small comment.

thanks! gave you some rep for that! hehe
