Best to stick with Nvidia, or you'll have terrible driver problems as you already have an Nvidia card:

8600GTS is the best you could get for your money, a little bit over budget, but worth it for the XFX branded one

I've just sold my gaming PC which had a x1900xt in it. How would this card compare to that ? As far as playing games goes that is.

yeah because if you search on google on how to remove nvidia drivers to be replcaed by ATI nothing comes up.

what processor you have atm,

If you can stretch get and 8800GT as the performance is crazy compared to the 8600GTS, i have two 8800GT in SLI and can handle any game at high even crysis.

8800GT about £100

all you need to do is run Driver Cleaner Pro in safe mode after unistalling from add/remove

its prob best to buy from ebuyer as if you have any problems you have the warranty with them.

e.g my motherboard broke after about 6 months of using it sent it back to ebuyer and had a new one sent out about 3 days later.
