i've got a geforce 2mx pci somewhere but i imagine the mobo must have built in graphics which will be way better! TBH, you'll struggle to get a PCI card that has anything like modern speeds....
Any PCI-E graphics card will work in a PCI-E 1x slot.
If you hack up the slot... They're different lengths. Cards should be backwardly compatible, but damaging your motherboard is a bit drastic. That's if there's even clearance behind the slot for the unused bit of edge connector.

I agree that the onboard video will be better than any PCI card, and a PCI-E 1x card would be so rare and expensive that you'd be cheaper buying a new motherboard.
i suspect most pci-e cards won't work at 1x speeds anyway even if you did hack the slot....i've got a hacked 8x slot on my dell poweredge and that works okay though....
the system ive got is a hp dc5100 small form factor so not sure what card might fit all i know is that its a pci express 1x slot and 2 pci slots

ive seen these coverters so u can fit a 16x card in a 1x slot but not sure where in the uk i can get one
just to add i can get any pci express card to go in but i need to cut the plastic off the back of the port which im goin do when the pc comes

so any cheap pci express graphics card will do
