My daughter has just read the first two books in the His Dark Materials trilogy and is so impressed she want to read everything else he has written! Looking for the following:

The Amber Spyglass
Lyra's Oxford
The Ruby in the Smoke
The Shadow in the North
The Tiger in the Well
The Tin Princess

Any other of his books considered too...

Once upon a Time in the North

Your daughter has good taste! These are my favourite series of books, too! (The film didn't do the book justice!)

There is also Once upon a Time in the North, which is the latest in the Northern Lights books.

Hope someone has some they are willing to sell :)

Thanks for this hodsey - didn't know about this prequel, but she'll be delighted to get another in this series! She is only 10 but an avid reader with a much higher reading age. Still, I thought these might have been a bit too advanced for her so I was delighted when she spent two full days in bed reading them!! Her reaction to the second book (finished yesterday) was pretty strong, and she woke up a couple of times in the night to discuss it with me. She was naturally upset that the main characters had died and wanted to show me the exact line -- something like ' They leaned against each other gently. And they died' - can't remember exactly I was pretty foggy at the time... -- but I feel this kind of writing is a really healthy and insightful way of introducing her to some big issues like this. Certainly a better option than the religious hokus pokus of the Narnia stories. Fantasy with underlying realism beats fantasy with underlying fantasy every time! REP coming!

The second was my favourite of the three... I finished reading the trilogy when I was travelling Australia, and I kid you not, when it ended, I felt like I didn't know what to do with myself! I've never experienced that with a book / books before... excellent reading. I think I cried too, so be prepared for that!

Once upon a Time in the North is the latest in the series - a short story based on a couple of characters in the main trilogy, showing how they met for the first time... has a load of little bits in like a game and maps and things too.

I think the first book is the hardest to read through - I know a lot of people (adults included) that have tried to read that and given up! Shame, as it really was excellent. So your daughter has done very well reading the first two. Hopefully she'll not struggle with Amber Spyglass - it's a lot longer, but hopefully that won't put her off.

Have you tried charity shops? I have definately (sp?) seen The Amber Spyglass there and my local charity shop sells three books for £1, that's a Red Cross shop, hth and your daughter gets what she wants. It's great when kids are more interested in books than tv, I loved reading as a kid and still do, there's nothing like losing yourself in a book.

Amazing set of books, pity the film was so bad :( I found it annoying that the name change to "The Golden Compas" was the same guy who changed harry potter and the philosophers stone to the sorcerer's stone :@

I got my Once upon a Time in the North at asda a few months back, think it was around £5 - £6, don't know if they still have them tho. I might have got my Lyra's Oxford from there too but forgotten. Anyway i've seen Amber spyglass in a charity shop by me for £3.50 so you should check out some of them. Also I know local library's have amber spyglass so maybe you could try and check the book out there until you find one to buy?

As for the other books if you don't get any luck on here i know amazon sell them, but not sure how much for.

Hope this helps :)

Thanks again cat74, but looks like either your luck is out or mine is in - Just back home and my partner picked this up at the library today. When we phoned this morning, they said they had no Pullman books in :? So that one is off the list now - updating OP
