There is an update coming soon. So it might be worth holding off until LT 2.0 comes out, which should be able to play the newer games, as the latest firmware wont play newer games. (gears included).

Oh really? How soon are we talking? And is it easy to update to a newer firmware?

If you get a used, preflashed Xbox, you will probably need to buy a special tool that will obtain the original drive key.
I dont know how soon, but the last few games, Warhammer, Gears, one dead island issue, had a new copy protection on that the current firmware wont play.

When it's ready, the new firmware will be released. Its playing these new games, and stuff apparantly, so its only a matter of time. Just thought I would let you know before you cashed out, and then were stuck with a console which will probably get banned if you take it onlive, and wont play the later games.

Im hoping it's released soon, too!

Yeah, Gears 3 uses the new DVD file system, XGD3, which is apparently causing problems even with original firmware (I read that some copies of the game are XGD2, some XGD3 so that Microsoft can test the waters with the new format). Either way, there will be a firmware update to work with the new games as soon as they figure it out, and there's usually one around November time as that's when Microsoft release their big dashboard updates, do a ban wave and introduce new anti-piracy measures and then new custom firmware has to come out to deal with those!

Oh man! That's gonna be one long wait. Might just get a proper one then because I only want it for Forza 4, PS3 has NO good racing games. It's really annoying.

Thank you for your feedback 'farfromout' and 'reddragon105'. I don't have a clue about this stuff, so I appreciate your input.

I dont think there was a XGD2 GoW3, but there was one with Dead Island..

Yeah I know there was for Dead Island. I just checked and the rumour that there was a Gears 3 XGD2 has been confirmed as a lie. The dash update in May reflashed DVD drives with new official firmware to support it and the latest LiteTouch firmware will allow you to boot XGD3 originals but people need to figure out how to make backups from them (they'll probably have new security sectors, anti-piracy measures, etc.) and then make firmware to support them. Hopefully it will all happen soon, but I've waited for months (November-January) for iXtreme updates before...
