When you say laser, do you mean optical?

If so, Tesco do a very decent Technika USB one for about £4.70? I can't remember to the penny, but that's what it was when I bought it. Two button and scroll wheel, so basic, but comfortable to hold and serves me well!

Yes, laser mice perform better on a variety on surfaces than optical mice do - definitely a worthwhile investment.
