dont forget your A4 piece of perspex! my son said that was the most valuable thing!

Good luck mate

I'm ex Royal Navy (left a few months back) so if you need any help or advice give us a PM. I take it your going to Raleigh?

As for your iron, Argos do a cheap one but you do a lot of ironing mate (you have 3 sets 4's, 2 sets of 3's, 1 set of 1's, two nordic tops, two pt kits, 1 overalls and they all need ironing. As does your sheet and duvet cover even your socks so i'd recommend getting the best iron you can afford.

I have a philips one used once in brand new box u can have for a tenner plus postage. It cost £39.99 and was given to me as a wedding gift but we have one.
#6
I would recommend spending a bit extra and getting something good. My mum bought me a cheap ****** iron for uni from tesco and it had no weight to it and was really rubbish, ended up sepdning twice as long to iron every item
#7
louloo: whats the perspex for?

Redlron: Thats the plan I need a decent iron for as cheap as possible :>
Yer im going to Raleigh and hopefully go on to be an Air Engineering Technician.
#8
Lewman I dont want a cheap ass iron due to me Ironing everyday and every crease will need to be perfect.
#9
so, let me get this right.

i pay, what, like 20 % tax.

the navy clearly spend most of their time ironing. so, im paying someone to sit on a big boat, and iron stuff.

why so much ironing....its not like any subs passing by will SEE how neat and tidy you look......

they should spend more time learning stuff thats important......i med a few navy boys on holiday last year....one of them COULDNT swim. lot of good that is. a sea man who cant swim.

Best of luck fella.......
#10
More in the skill of using an iron than the iron itself ;)
#11
Plenty of irons in the navy you wont need to take your own :w00t:

All your clothes need to be A4 sized!

Seriously you have to iron and fold your clothes down to A4 size for your kit musters! It's a bast*rd but they only make you do it at Raleigh.

You'll hate Raleigh when you're there mate, everyone does but when you leave you'll miss it. My advice for Raleigh is;

Take an MP3 player with as much music you can get on it, take your mobile phone (bear in mind you can't leave the base whilst your in your basic training), take a shoe polishing kit (cotton wool and black shoe polish)

It's hard there and you feel like you don't stop but it's worth it in the end when you do your passing out parade and your family is watching you march around smart as a guardsman with your rifle.

I can't give you any advice on being an AET as I was a OM EW or a WS as they call it now

JOIN THE NAVY - MASTERS IN IRON TO IRON COMBAT.

also, navy seals - were trained in washing, and tumble drying.
#14
I went to get my kit list yesterday and they suggested I get one for basic training

k13 wdj - God knows how he couldn't swim! You have to tread water for 3 minutes and swim 50 meters in overalls to get past basic training!

It's a lie that he couldn't swim as part of the entrance test when your at HMS Raleigh is swimming 50 metres, swimming 50m in overalls and combat boots, jumping off the top diving board in an immersion suit and swimming to a lift raft 25m away and climbing in

You do a lot of ironing at Raleigh as it teaches you to look after yourself and your kit. There is nothing worse than being on a cramped warship with someone who can't look after themselves.

Raleigh is all about making the person suitable for military life rather than anything else.

We pay 20% tax too by the way and spend most of that time ironing!

When you get on ship there is a chinese man who does it for you (seriously)

RedIron - I'm really looking forward to Raleigh. It will be a challenge and something new. I know there will be difficult times but I really want to do this.

The iron is a Philips mistral 2000 series steam iron.1600w,variable steam, shot of steam etc and apparently is fast with good performance!! It has a ceralon base any good?

guys......i wasnt having a total dig, just a light hearted wise crack.

do you do a heli evac simulation......i did one for offshore......it was FECKING cold......10 metres under, 4 degree water.......your heart rate slows down to a third of resting rate....the diver reflex......it was hardcore !

enjoy your basic buddy......

Good man during the 8 weeks (is it still 8 weeks?) you;

Learn to march
Learn to shoot (An SA80)
Learn First Aid (Battle first aid)
Get fit
Learn the ranks and insignia (i'd recommend learning that before you go actually)
Learn what to do in a Nuclear / Biological / Chemical attack (get issued your gas mask and your taught how to use it)
Learn a bit about ropes and general ship husbandry
Learn about what the Royal Navy does

That's al I can think of at the moment

I didn't have to do that but the RN does have the facilities, as an AET there's a good chance moosey will have to do it
#21
k13 wjd don't worry mate I knew you were taking the p1ss! The interent needs a sarcasm button to avoid confusion :>
#22
RedIron it's 9 weeks now. They only increased it a few months ago. To be honest I haven't been training as hard as I should but I can still run 4.5 miles in 41 minutes and 1.5 miles in 11 so it isn't all bad. If I had been rigorous with training those times should be a couple minutes faster.

When I done my pre entry fitness test I could do the 1 and a half in 11 and a half minutes, for my first fitness test at Raleigh (3 weeks in) I had knocked a minute of that, when I done my last fitness test I could do it in just over 9.

After joining ship I was probably about 14 minutes! You don't keep fit on ship lol well they do have a gym actually
#24
Well fitness is going to be a big thing for me after basic training. I've lost 4 stone in weight so far and I want a six-pack :>. By the time basic training is over I will have lost even more weight! I used to be 18 1/2 stone at the moment I’m around 14 1/2. So after basics I would have lost over 5 stone :>

that ne will never be good enough. the navy are really picky on presentation. and this requires a decent iron.

sorry no joy
#27
can't you take a trouser press.....that would be ideal

looks for that sarcasm button.

once youve learned to shoot a sa80, do you get to play with anything, slightly larger shall we say ?

Wasn't there a big hoohah about that a couple of years ago, some Hong Kong laundry's been doing it for 150 years and the price hasn't increased in the whole time?
#30
toothpaste and a toothbrush are great for your hats and we used to use bleach for our lanyards, mind you that was only in Sea Cadets, wish I'd joined the Navy now, a damp tea towel is great for ironing your pants, number one and twos, and I used to set fire to the shoe polish and put it out with the lid of the polish tin and then dag up to a great shine. Good luck, and I hope you enjoy the training.

And don't forget to put a copy of this song on that MP3 player. :)
