i think it might be helpful if you specify which kind of cable you need.... some laptops use hdmi, some use s-video out am sure there are many other types and so it might help people if you can suggest which connections you need.

Hello, Firstly, look on the back of your laptop for a blue D shape connector with around 15 holes in it shown in 3 rows of 5. The background of this connector is normally blue on modern laptops.

Then look on the back of your TV for a similar socket also in blue, if you have both, then you simply need a male to male VGA connector cable (Male has pins, female has holes)

If you don't have these connections on your TV or laptop then check out this site
http://www.varologic.com/blog/post/2009/04/14/cables-for-everyone.aspx

and determine which connections you have based on the cables available.

Hiya, thanks for the help!!
Okay, my laptop has the blue one like you say, but i cant find anything on the tv :( (does it make any diff if a sky box and a dvd player is plugged in -would this cable go in one of those?)

No, your sky box/dvd plpayer will be linked by either scart or hdmi cable. How old is your tv, does it have a pc input built in (most modern lcd tvs will)

If not, your gonna have to go for somethin like a vga (your laptop output) to s-video or scart lead depending what connections you have available on your tv. To assist us, could you give us the make n model of your tv & laptop please

youre a star, thank you

My laptop is Compaq CQ56 and the Tv is a Phillips and its about 5years old -ive seen a little hole saying S-Video (is that right!!??)

Just having a look on that site you mentioned before and this looks like it might be the one, what do you think?
