Thanks Kommunist.

Have you had any experience with these ? I'm wanting to use then for media streaming (mainly divx video)?

I am using 3 homeplugs now - 2 Solwise ones and 1 MaxValue (BTW - this is the cheapest I could find - 21.99 from Amazon.

I am very impressed with Solwise ones (made by Aztech, same as Devolo) and not impressed at all with MaxValue (made by ST&T). On the same power line, using MaxValue kit speed is dropping about 20% compared to Solwise. Don't know why is that as both supposedly should use the same reference design.

So I decided that I'd rather buy quality product and ordered two more Solwise homeplugs for 57 quid delivered.

As to streaming Divx - it obviously depends on state of your wires - I am able to stream from NAS to 2 Xboxes and PS2 at the same time, no problem so far.

UPD: Sorry forgot to say that my tests were done Solwise to Solwise vs Solwise vs MaxValue.

im having trouble with the wireless connection in my house, could using one of these be an alternative?
#16

Why buy 3?
not being cheeky, just a genuine question.

If i attached one to my router, would the other 2 be able to connect to that plug?

Wouldnt i need 2 pairs (4 plugs) if i wanted to connect my PC and Xbox to the router? i was under the impression that a pair of plugs was needed for each device.

This is a great alternative, just plug one into your router and the other into your device and you get networking over the mains system!

I have 2 already and was thinking of buying another as I assumed that you could plug in as many as you like as long as one of them is attached to the router?

so let me see if i understand this correctly...

at then minute i have a home pc directly connected to the router, my pc upstairs which never connects wirelessly, and my brothers lap top which always works fine when connected wirelessly, and my 360 which is currently not connected.

if i wanted to connect my pc and my 360 to the router would i need three plugs or 4 plugs?

do they just plug into the main and then use ethernet to the computer/router?

You would need 3 plugs:

1. From mains to router
2. From mains to PC
3. From mains to 360

You then just run a cat5 cable from the plug to your device and it's networked!!

sorry to the op for hijacking this thread, but this is amazing, ive never heard of these things before! as compensation i will have a look round and try and find you a good price, it would be in my best interest as it look like i need some of these as well.
#21
this kind of thing could save me £50 on a wireless adapter for my 360, and I could use it for other things too....

very interested in these also :D

Just got the solwise from maplins, £29.99 or £50 for the two as mentioned here.

These are 85Mbps rates, only pulling 5.33.

Since I have surge protectors could be the problem, returning mine.

I know you never get the advertised speed but !

ur not meant to have them on surge protectors i head drops the speed

you may be a legend in the making. I've noticed that as soon as anybody else uses the internet in my house, wheter it be wired or wireless, then my connection just totally drops. I'm the only one using the plugs, and for the life of me, can not figure out what's wrong. It's only happened recently, and now that you mentioned it, the only change i;ve made is that i bought a surge protector extension and that's where the homeplug is plugged into. will have a bash at using whilst connected directly into the wall socket!!!

Are you getting 5.33MB (that's MegaBytes) or 5.33Mb (Megabits) per second? If it is the former, then that's what you should expect from Homeplug (85Mb is roughly 10MB but actual speed is normally 40Mb, which is 5MB). If it is the former (600KB/s) then surge protection is taking its toll.
#26
It's defo the slower rate. My XBOX running XBMC is having great problems playing the video.

Just went back to my Belkin wireless G gaming adapter and streams nicely. You can pick these up on fleebay for about £20 in brown box versions.

I'd rather have the surge protector in place on my expensive stuff and wireless than faster speed and no protection.

However they do recommend you plug these units directly into the wall socket, so gang plugs etc may also be an issue.

TBH i'm struggling for power sockets (forever plugging stuff in and out) so can't afford to spare a wall plug for 1 item !
#27
This is strange as even at 5Mbps you shouldn't have problems with Divx as it is rarely exceeding 2Mbps. Streaming DVD over will be problematic indeed as video can go upto 10Mbps.
#28
I have 2 Solwise PL-14PE 14Mbps HomePlug Adapters available + router + discs.

Any use?
