I have retail copy at home (will update tomorrow, if don't get someone else first)
ok let me know about that. is it quite easy to install on a vista laptop? as i don't want to mess about with my laptop. i am googling it now.
You'll need a Vista DVD (probally from your computer manufacter) cause some don't send it (as have a image reload partation, press a certain key after BIOS)
But XP/Vista easy to install, just agree to everything.
BEST to check if you need drivers for some of your hardware (should be ok thou as XP has large drivers on dvd)
not sure how the dual boot works like licensing wise, but microsoft allow you to install xp on a machine that came with vista (sort of like down grading) when i did it once at work microsoft advised me to use any valid xp key from another machine and that would be accepted as a genuine product.
like i said though not sure how it works if you have both operating systems on
You will need two licenses or official CD Keys, one for Vista and one for XP. In fact you only need a valid CD key, you can use a copied / bacup CD as long as it will install the version of XP you are licensed for. The money is in the license not in the media or the program comtained on it.

You will also either need to install XP first (as you cant install XP after you have installed VISTA) or you will have to muck about with boot managers etc.

My personal opinion is to partition the HDD into two (one for XP one for VIsta), install XP onto one Partition, then Install Vista onto the other and use the boot manager that comes with Windows to sort out the background work. Not elegant, not even very good, but useable, which is what you want.

Whatever you do dont put them on the same partition, you are asking for trouble.
my sony vaio laptop is model VGN NS10J. I didn't see any drivers on the sony site. anyone know of these laptop able to install XP on them? and thanks simon. i will partition it. i would say around 10-15gb for xp as i have 250gb hard drive on my lappy and 3gb ram so thats more than enough.
And be aware that some laptops that were purchased with vista will need a BIOS update to install xp  and not all laptops with vista support xp, :x I know this from experience repaired a mates Sony (hard drive fail) he wanted xp on it fine I thought wont take me long oooh no not long what a pain firstly the model he had did not support xp. So I trawled the net and found all the drivers then found out that the BIOS did not support the xp drivers what a pain in the ar#e ended up recovering the backup partition from he’s original drive and imaged it to new drive and reinstalled vista.
Most lappys will be ok but just do your homework on your model before you start lashing out your hard earned cash
Good luck
thanks im not sure i may give sony a ring and find out because im not 100% sure my lappy supports xp.
