If you don't have any luck here mate have a look at running a server 2003 virtual macine on your desktop machine. Could be an alternative.

Most industries use virtual machines as servers to be honest mate. If your laptop has enough ram and HD space you can create a few machines with 512MB asigned to each one.

In the office I work we use VM's for a domain controller, SQL server and various deployment servers.

Far less hassle and less space taking than an old boxes :)

I have to agree with the poster who suggested Virtual Machines. Cheap and easy to do. No need to fiddly about and buy new parts.

i will deffinatly be doing this option also. But i need to practice from scratch, i.e connecting cables, hubs, routers etc all i have is a laptop so i cant physically connect it to anything if i dont have anything lol

Hmm. Im at the uni of York and there is a student run computer group you can find here: www.comprec.org.uk.
The price and quality points are astounding as they're all ex-uni machines. Base specs but easily upgradable, however PERFECT for a server. They only open 2-5pm on Wednesday and its best to get there and have a look to pick what you want. They have duplex laser printers for 15 quid with some toner left, hundreds of keyboards, mice, internal parts and cables.

Bad news however is they don't post. Possibly talk to your uni and ask if they run a similar scheme. Most places "burn" theirs for data protection but bring what they can back to the students.

would be helpful if u were willing to buy then i can arrange a curiour?.....
#21
Unfortunately not as simple as that. I have no car and i live a fair ways from uni so getting it back to my place is going to be a problem. Talk to your uni, they must have something they can help you with

i have a samsung optical mouse which i can do for £4.00, also have a keyboard but i think the postage cost would be high, also have a old computer (which i think is working but havent tested it) but it doesnt have a harddrive scavenged that for something else. i Think the specs are 1.3 ghz amd processor, 512mb ram, cd rw drive, dvd drive, ethernet card. If youre interested id give you a price? but not sure how much a courier would be.

yeah depending on price id be interested in all...i could arrange and pay for a curiour so a price just for the bits....ive seen some v good deals on ebay just the postage is high
#25
say 4 for the mouse
5 for the keyboard
and 30 for the comp?

so 39? then you arrange courier

EDIT: Just checked and the powersupply and all the ables are all disconnected from the mobo, but it would be a good learnin g experience for you! Also i have a 15 inch lg tft monitor which i can include for £55 for everything! then you organise courier.
#26
ill have a think...cos i can get one on ebay for £19 with keyboard....will get back to you
#27
Okay well i can do it for 45 if you want.
#28
Thinking about it i really just need to get rid of this pc as its wasting space so id do it for £25 for the computer (all cables disconnected inside so you can learn how to pout it together, hence why its cheaper), mouse, and keyboard! Then you just have to arrange a courier. I can do the lg monitor for 15 with the computer or £20 without.
#29
tbh, that is a VERY good deal and I would take it. Your postage is going to be high but if theres nothing near you... Its only going to be a server o a 1.3ghz will be fine. Set up SSH and lose any GUI.

#33
yeah ill take pics and put it up tonight! just a reminder it does need a harddrive as i mentioned in the first post but it was all working before i took the harddrive out but havent tested it since bringing it back down from the loft. Ill take pics and post them here tonight. EDIT just checked and there is a little damage to the cooling fan but thats like a 99p repair or so.
