I reckon you can still keep your 3GB for 2 years. It's like connecting your Twitter account to get more space - I created a new account, connected with dropbox, got the space, deleted my fresh Twitter account - still got extra space :)

Earn free Dropbox space for everyone at your school! Join Space Race to get an extra 3 GB for two years, plus the space your school earns!
So if loads of people at your institute sign up, you can get 25gb extra max, but only for 2 years.
