Absinthe 2.0.4 jailbreaks all (iPhone & iPad) iOS 5.1.1 devices
Absinthe's "so-easy-your-grandma-could-do-it" jailbreak tool just got an update to version 2.0, enabling support for a handful of Apple portables running iOS 5.1.1. Absinthe 2.0, which was developed by the "Jailbreak Dream Team" (Chronic-Dev and iPhone Dev) joins Redsn0w's tool, and will support all iPhone and iPad versions, with the exception of iPad2,4 -- the most recent iPad 2 variant, shipping with a 32nm A5 chip. The jailbreak tool can also be installed on iPod3,1 and 4,1 models.

If you need to unlock your iPhone or iPad to use it on a different network then you should not upgrade to newer firmware/software, as unlock is not available for new versions. There is a way around it, there are utilities like redsn0w which will let you customise your firmware files which doesn't upgrade the baseband (part which is required to enable unlock)
it works on ipad 3 u must have the latest firmware 5.1.1 download the custom firmware from http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/
go to itunes and click restore and shift button at the same time and select the file and upgrade. when its finished click restore from back up to get all apps and photos music etc then jailbreak job done

thanks i upgraded from apple firmware that was causing the problem
yeh i done it, i installed the new firmware from the setting menu. I can confirm doing a full restore than jailbreak works :).
Voting hot on behalf of most people though, tethered jailbreaks are just not worth the hassle in case device reboots when not at home so this is a great usable solution.
