Got to be worth a look, thanks.

You can study for free but you need to pay to get your certificate.

All learning is free to access on ALISON, meaning you can study and complete all of our courses free of charge. Receiving a separate certificate, either by PDF or by parchment, is an additional service offered for which ALISON charges. If you wish not to subscribe to this paid service, then you can still complete your learning in full. It is the choice of the learner. Although there is no obligation to purchase, it is a popular option amongst our learners. See http://alison.com/knowledgebase/entry/6/.

These get posted all the time, and I always add heat because they're ace! Alison courses are quite good - I've done a couple to pass the nightshifts while it's quiet at work in winter.

Also try:
Vision2Learn for UK fully certified NVQ Lvl2 courses, entirely free (England only). There are several lengthy threads on here for more info about them.
Coursera for university level courses from establishments all over the world. No formal qualification gained, but many do give a certificate of completion which won't do your CV any harm.
Udacity, similar to Coursera

are these worth any UCAS points?

are these worth any UCAS points?

I wouldn't bet my life on it, but I'd say almost certainly not. They're not going to count for much formally, except a bit of kudos and personal development.

Received a reply from Alison Courses:

''ALISON qualifications are not traditional qualifications in the sense of being accredited by local or national institutions. ALISON qualifications are universal, and can be validated and verified at any time by asking the ALISON graduate to sit an assessment (our Flash tests - alison.com/test) on whatever course a third party wishes to test the holder on. The ALISON learning system is based on the fact that anyone who is a graduate can be tested at any time. Potential employers can also verify your qualification at any time at alison.com/cert/check by entering the certificate number and pincode. An ALISON qualification shows that a person is self-disciplined in taking the initiative in furthering his/her career/knowledge, which is an important characteristic in anyone wishing to pursue a third-level education.

ALISON is continuously growing, and the idea is that over time ALISON qualifications will become known through our learners, without seeking formal accreditation or recognition from an institutional body.
For more information on accreditation/recognition, see http://alison.com/knowledgebase/entry/104/ and http://alison.com/knowledgebase/entry/44/.

It is certainly recommended to put your completed ALISON courses on your CV. An ALISON certificate or diploma can be of benefit in job and college applications; however it will depend on the individual employer/college. Any other qualifications and relevant experience you have will of course also be important. An ALISON qualification shows that a person is self-disciplined in taking the initiative in furthering his/her career/knowledge, which is an important characteristic in anyone wishing to pursue a third-level education.
