Course is filled now, but I'm going to take a look through the courseware and have signed up for notification when they resit the course, just in case.

Do find it interesting that they provide details for Mac and Windows users, but not us Linux people. Which I find humorous, given that Google's primary desktop OS is a GNU/Linux system (well over half of their employees use Google's tailored Ubuntu OS as their desktop environment) and all of Google's internal tools are made for this Linux based system.

Anything similar for Iphone? As part of my course I will be programming an Iphone app that I believe is object oriented. It would be handy to get a jump on the material.

Thanks

I wrote my first Android app a few months ago. Forums and blogs were be far the most educational resources I used. Writing a basic Android app is incredibly simply but understanding performance tweaks, memory management, and all the other quirks, I ditched Google's guides and sort help for the hardcore programmers on Stackoverflow.

Hated java, tutor at uni completely anti microsoft and forced everyone to use eclipse which was sh*t 14 years ago and marked people down if they tried to use visual studio.

Unity much more fun to use.

coursera is another good place for free online courses, they normally have assessments that get marked through automated software and well populated discussion forums. At least for the scala and java courses I've done.

They have also done android development courses, not sure when the next ones are, but they will be listed on the site.

You can also find lots of course material from univeristy courses that cover app development in iTunes U https://www.apple.com/uk/education/ipad/itunes-u/

Cool, I mean Hot!

Not very well named. That said, it seems like just about every app on my phone has been written by someone who's taken a crash course. Possibly the PhD in some instances.

TBH courses like this are a little out of date, unless you're planning on using the Android SDK and Java from scratch which, let's face it, not all that many Android developers do these days. New developers are better off going for some of the codeless development tools available.

I have 25+ years' software development experience and I use Unity for all my dev work these days. Needs some coding but it's cross-platform and doesn't take a lot of tweaking to get your projects working on Android.

Unity is free, by the way.
