The assistant said she thought it was all stores. Its to try and get everyone to re-use the bags - the free ones give you a kick start !

I looked and this was posted over month ago saying it was for two weeks then-so i think htis is a new promotion.

I know in our store the girl actually warned me that they will no longer be giving out free bags. You either have to take your own or buy them. So maybe this is them leading up to this by giving out the bags for nothing the now.

This was happening in my local store today too (Cheshire) so I guess it is nationwide.
The shop assistant was horrified when I said I didn't want one (I always carry bags around with me now). Our local store also tried to charge people 1p for bags a few months ago (this might have been nationwide too) but due to consumer pressure they quickly stopped that!

The bags should be free anyway....

I work for Asda. We've all been individually taken in and advised that from 16th May for two weeks, Asda will be giving away bags for life for promotion. The government have apparently given all supermarkets at target for bags for life and reduction of normal carrier bags. Asda will not stop giving away free carrier bags but will try and promote bags for life and similar in the future. This promo starts as far as I'm aware from the 16th for two weeks.

a bit off topic but ..does asda have a policy not to let customers buy too much of 1 item...like say 30 bags of chips?

think they are OK will normal items , I bought 6 tubs of dove sunkissed moisteriser as it was £4.90 down to £2.
But when they had the legs of lamb on special offer, I went to buy 4 and on the self scan it wouldnt let me - the girl came over and i said well i will just put one in the car and come back and buy another etc... she pressed some buttons and overrode it, i bought all four at once :-D

To be honest, I've only been there 3 months and have never had a customer by 30 of anything.....unless it's yoghurts so I couldn't say for sure. But at my checkout training I was never advised of this being a problem.

The first 'free bag for life' that was listed here about 4 or 5 weeks ago wasn't at my store either cuz I mentioned it to a supervisor, that it had been listed on here and she looked at me like there was a screw loose too! Haha.

i heard an announcement in boldon asda yesterday saying "five free bags for life at checkouts" - didn't get any cos used self scan (normal carrier bags there) and didn't need a bag

My Asda in Rochdale stopped giving away free bags shortly after the new year.

I disagree. If good bags that can be reused are free all the time, there's no incentive to reuse them, so it's an even bigger waste than the free small bags! More charges for all bags everywhere, please.
#16
Thanks for info, good to know as I'll be in shopping in Asda tomorrow. Hot :)
#17
I got a couple last night and by the time I got home one hads ripped.. maybe a bad one but don't think much of the quality..

I reuse the free ones anyway for picking up dog muck..

Got two today for free.

I got two yesterday for free!

I stand corrected people!! I was working today and the BFL promo has started. So as many of them as you want - knock yourself out! :D

I went to Asda this morning, they are no longer supplying standard carrier bags, but they are giving away 'Bags for Life' for FREE! Hooray!:-D I managed to get 3 (that was all I needed)
#22
Got 2 free bags today from my local Asda in Arnold, Nottm x
#23
instead of pushing bags for life why dont they concentrate on the amound of wasted plastic elsewhere. bottles of coke should be in cans, Asda seem to be selling items in smaller packets - i can no longer get redy break in 750g packs - only 500g packs - it seem to be the same witha lot of items.

It is a ploy to hit the shopper and make more proffits for the supermarkets and government...

Same, in Derby though, the check out girl I asked seemed quite offended there was something that she didn't know/hadn't been told.

Why can't you recycle coke bottles?

To say it's aploy to make money is plain stupid. They're giving away FREE 5p or 10p bags to everyone for teh whole week. Stop moaning, take the blumming bags and make sure you re-use them :p

I keep them in the boot.

I work at Asda in Blackpool and we have been running this promo, but a lot of the stores are restricting the amount of free bags they order every week and 'forcing' the customer into buying the bags for life. But people are all complaining to the supermarkets, but it is the government that are forcing this through, they (the Govnt) are going to start fining stores if they produce too much waste. Which is another reason why product packaging is starting to shrink. Hence all the super concentrated washing up liquids and laundry liquids being advertised. Also Asda have cut the size of their cordial bottles, by you guessed it making the juice super concentrated.
