I'm generally an Avast free fan, but will give this a go .... got the 365 days cover OK when I put the licence code in when installing....but it is on a clean W8.1 computer which has never had AVG before

MS Essentials is poor.......would you really rely on the people who provide an operating system with vulnerabilities which can be exploited by hackers/viruses to protect you from hackers/viruses ?

Try uninstalling AVG and the option for Free trial appears as an option rather than a complete uninstall...agree to this and after restart upgrade with serial number provided above

When I go to install this, and select a custom install, there's no anti-virus component listed. Yet, the website mentions it "Award winning AntiVirus that just works with automatic updates to shield you from continually evolving threats".

EDIT: Never mind, installed anyway. Anti-virus is included. I guess it's not an optional component and that's why it didn't show in the list. I got 374 days! Thanks op.

Honestly is this thing a resource hog like Mcafee and Norton products?

great! worked for me...

I don't know how the rest of you are doing it but if you already have avg installed you just go to options>activate and paste the code...it should then prompt you to install the other components.

The antivirus element is the main standard component, so I would not expect it to be selectable in custom install.....you should only be able to deselect optional components

Here's what AVG is currently using on my system. Bear in mind, I'm only using anti-virus and web protection components and am running Win7 64bit:
avgcsrva.exe - scanning core module 35Mb
avgidsagent.exe - Identity protection service 14.3Mb
avgnsa.exe - Online shield service 9.5Mb
avgrsa.exe - resident shield service 6.8Mb
avgui.exe - user interface 5.5Mb
avgwdsvc.exe - watchdog service 9.8Mb

No CPU cycles currently in use, so it's all passive. I'd say that compares well with all the others I've used (e.g. Avira, BitDefender, McAfee).

Yeah, I figured that out eventually and edited my post accordingly. Cheers :)

This is a leaked extended trial version of AVG from Huawei that's been floating around the web for nearly 18 months, and contrary to what you're told, you can download it any time you like and install it any time you like as it's from Huawei, not SharewareonSale.

If you're on Windows 8/8.1 you're better off using Windows Defender that's already built in. Uses no resources at all unless you're scanning.

As I said before, I disagree, Microsoft leaves the vulnerabilities......do you trust them to protect your computer from these being exploited

Absolutely. That combined with a generously developed ability to protect my own PC leaves me with very little in the way of vulnerabilities. Been running 3 years virus free over 2 PC builds now.

I have read that Bit Defender uses less resources than others, but i can tell you the main differences, and those are bit Defender gives you 6 months and here you have 1 year PRO usage. ;)
