Libraries in several parts of the UK allow residents to access loads of top UK magazines every month (172 currently available) using the Zinio App for android or iOS and also online in your web browser. All you need is a library card which you can get free at your local library. Some regions also offer comics, books and audiobooks for download as well.

I have included a link to the Essex Library site as the main link, but you will need to check if your region offers this service.

I searched in Google and found that the following areas have zinio available, but it may be available in many other areas:

Manchester, Leeds,Westminster, Derbyshire, Suffolk, Edinburgh, Northern Ireland, West Sussex,Glasgow, Solihull, Tameside, Swindon, Plymouth, East Riding, Staffordshire, Northamptonshire,Coventry, Wales, Cambridgeshire, Fife, Leicester, Warwickshire, Sheffield, Brighton etc. etc.

It seems that different regions have different magazines available, but here is the list for Essex as an example:

Just bear in mind the full potential list of magazines is not necessarily available in every region. There are different levels to which libraries (trusts) can subscribe - confirmed to me by our local trust a few years back - so presumably chosen according to budget and popularity.

In Fife our selection has changed slightly each spring; we usually get about 100 from the list. They've recently re-included New Scientist which had previously been dropped, along with the BBC Music magazine. I seem to remember the Economist being available at one point but certainly not now. Or perhaps that was in Lothian rather than Fife :-).

Top Gear and National Geographic seem to be constants each year, along with Good Food & its veggie version. The other stalwarts permanently on our list seem to be Bella, Chat, Now, Hello and others in that vein.

Would love to see an extension of this into newspapers, even if as a premium service, as a budget way into the paywall.

In my area the Economist is listed, but is always "sold out" virtually immediately, so it seems that in some cases there is a limited quota of each edition available.

@mikepaterson: I recently moved to Essex but im still registered in Westminster library and the selection of magazines is quite limited. Would you mind providing a list of magazines shared by Essex library?

Thanks OP, didn't know this!

Thanks, just got everything setup there's a surprising amount of good magazines. I wish the zinio for libraries app was better though… I was hoping to read during commute to work, but looks like desktop will be a better option.

On my iPad it works fine, I can download any of the magazines to it and watch at any point at all.. what is the problem you are having?

I used to get Playstation Magazine through Hertfordshire libraries, which was great considering its £6 for a physical copy. Sadly they have removed it from their list now, but it is still a great service if there is a title for you.

It's all done through RBDigital...
Here's Brighton

I guess just change to your own city in the URL?

Going through this link takes you to the main page so magazines on the left and comics on the right :)
Found out the additional stuff through the post about this last year... only reason I joined the library!

Unfortunately not, but I have added lots of links in the original post. Please let me know if when you check your local library they offer the service and I will add the link.
