Dropbox is giving you 500MB of free storage (up to 4.5GB) every time you upload 500MB of photos.

Upgrade to the new version from this URL: http://forums.dropbox.com/topic.php?id=52900 and upload some high quality photos.

Or read about it here:

The dropbox account is free to start with, this adds to the basic storage you are allocated.

box is free aswell.. 5gb usually, but a quick hack or a little request on xda
will get you a free 50gb account.

If you have a rooted android phone go to
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1383808
and follow the instructions

If not search xda and there's threads where you put your email and one of
the good people such as myself will set you up a 50gb account :)

To be frank, it looks a little buggy to me. Created random folders and some pictures can not be synced.

Ooops, yes I have, but it was soooo long ago I forgot about it.

If you are going to post on here and add to a deal, then at least give a link to where the added stuff can be found.
Clicking on the link shows me straight away where I can get 50Gb of storage.....Oh wait.

Hmm... so you only get the extra space when you upload, and potentially only for the duration of the beta testing period...

"During this beta period, we are also offering additional free space to test automatic uploading of photos and videos. For every 500MB of photos and videos automatically uploaded, you'll receive another 500MB space bonus, up to 4.5GB total"

The box deal is better (in my opinion) as all I did was sign up and got 50gb instantly for the life of the account.

Or you can use minus.com - which is my personnal favourite - link here = Minus.com
Offers 10Gb for free but very easy to upload and download share etc plus you can get apps for ios and android!!

The difference between dropbox and others (box etc) is that dropbox will create a folder in your pc, which makes it much more easier to access to your files without having to connect to the internet (unless you want to share something with friends then yes you will need to connect to the internet then). This is what others cant offer at the moment

agreed - dunno why people are bringing BOX into this thread when its nothing like dropbox in terms of folder sync / auto backup etc

at the moment all my important files / folders get auto backed up daily / weekly to my dropbox folder where I know they will then get auto synced online. Cant see how BOX can do this at all

it would be commercial suicide to remove the free GB after the beta period. I cant see this happening at all.

Thanks OP - now have 10.2GB free

Yes, but it doesn't say that the storage won't be reduced after the trial beta period does it?

Nope, but it cleary says: "During this beta period, we are also offering additional free space to test automatic uploading of photos and videos. For every 500MB of photos and videos automatically uploaded, you'll receive another 500MB space bonus, up to 4.5GB total"

So the extra storage would seem to be for testing the automatic uploading of photos and videos during the beta period

Expriation of Free Space - The free space will remain after testing. Look at your account and you will see the additional storage listed as your regular storage. It is not temporary or separatly marked in any way. And it would be idiotic to entice people to test something by giving them temporary space.

Box.Net - Got their free space offer on my Android phone a while back. The upload speed is super slow AND it has a file limit of 100mb. Yes, you read that correctly. Box.net is a waste of time.

How to do this - Although not entirely clear from the articles or posts, I've done this and gotten the free space so hopefully others can benefit from my fumbling to get it working. You install the software and then when you plug an SD card (other external storage may also work) into your computer and the autorun pops up your choice of what to do. Usually most often you probably click to explore the files. But now you have a new option to sync it with Box.net. Click that and the program will scan the SD card and automatically add the picture and video files to your dropbox folder on the computer. Then the program will sync that folder with your online account and credit you the additional space. Then you can delete the SD card, delete the stuff in your dropbox folder on your computer and start the process over again until you max out the free space. You can even transfer files to your SD card to do this (the files need not be from your camera) and pop it out and back in again. And I find movies are easier to use than picutres because you can move less of them (larger file sizes). The program seems to know if you re-upload the same file over and over so if you don't have any movies you can use, just set your camera to record a video until it fills the SD card, rinse and repeat.

Hope this helps.

thanks for clarifying (I think you mean IMPORT to dropxbox on autoplay options).

I just stuck a 10 x 500mb avi files on a USB stick (same film, just copied and renamed it 9 times lol).

Inserted it into PC, opened explorer, right click on drive and select AUTOPLAY, then import to dropbox

BTW, thought there must have been a catch with box.net (100mb file size limit and no local folder sync rules it out for me as being useful).

Sugar Sync and Windows Live Mesh both do this with 5 GBs of free space to begin with, I'd imagine theres plenty more site offering it aswell. Better than using a single drop box account you could use Gladinet to link to several cloud hosting sites.

Personally I use Dropbox with the free 2GB for my documents and files, and use Box with the free 50GB for my photos. And if you map the Box account as a network drive on your PC you can use it just like Dropbox.

Moneysaver9988 any chance of an invite for a 50gb account ;)

Brilliant! I have managed to get an extra 2Gb by using my college email account, and now I am able to pick up more space. I was running at 7.8Gb before I started, I go the 500mb within 5 mins of my first photograph upload, iPhone is now shifting 9Gb up too..... we will see if this goes without a hitch (not sure how long it will take though.

I see that the free space is only once you have upgraded your drop box to 1.3.12 (at the moment) and then only when you connect either an SD type card, camera or phone....It does know when there are duplicates so you can not simply rename photographs :-)) Big Thanks as this beats MS Skydrive (which I use too when I need to).
#33
Just to clarify the confusion for me, are you adding 500MB worth of photo/video at a time to get 500MB free? (i.e adding 600MB photo/video wont get me 600MB extra free?)

And actually, its possible to get upto 5GB free not 4.5GB

[Update: To clarify, you can get up to 5GB of free space with this feature, if you count the initial 500MB space for the first photo import].

Box is nothing like the same service as dropbox.

I currently have 18gb of dropbox space so will do this and get me some more :)
#35
How did you manage to get to 18gb?
This is a great find op, I only had 3.75gb itmay take some time with my upload speed but 8.75gb here I come.

It is possible, you simply log an alternative email address (keeping the normal one) and, for me, it was instant... as long as it has not been used/ linked before
