This might not seem special to those who have MS software licenses at work that allow them to download any MS software they want for free, but I would have loved this when I was a student, for our home network and servers. As such, this is probably only going to appeal to geeks who are full time students. Anyone with a .ac.uk email address can register with Microsoft DreamSpark at http://www.dreamspark.com/

This then allows you to download free, full versions of, among others:
Visual Studio Professional 2012 (normally £502 - http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msuk/en_GB/pdp/productID.255123400?tid=stvIk17qq )
SQL Server 2012 (normally upwards of £3k depending on deployment)
Windows Server 2012 (normally upwards of £600 depending on deployment)
Windows Server 2008 R2 ( currently £611.14 at Tesco )

plus lots of other cool bits ond bobs to muck about with, some of which are available for free elsewhere like Robotics Developer Studio, Kinect SDK, MS Mathematics 4.0.

And free 90-day subscription to Plural Sight training (worth $87)

Just tried it, it seems this is not for all ac.uk addresses -
It seems that this could work for students, who can verify their status :)
But I can't use it with my work ac.uk address as my employer is not registered with this system. :(

MS have been a bit slow to add academic institutions to the list but for those that have been added, an email address is sufficient validation (so staff could get the software, too, but that would be naughty).

that's under the DreamSpark Premium offering and is as you have stated although at my place no one I've asked seems to know who actually subscribes for it, i think it was done by a tutor that has now left and it carries on -

the listed is under DreamSpark 'standard' and if your institution is listed at the sign up point you're sorted.

Dreamspark has been around for years.
Thanks for posting though as there are always people haven't found out about it yet.

if you can get your hands on an ISIC card, that works too to get access.

Thank you for posting ! I got MS Visio for free !

I just selected my institution from the list that popped up when I started typing the name and it seems to be letting me download Windows server datacenter

My uni is not registered with Dreamspark, and I know others aren't either but good if you can get it
#11
It needs you Uni/Faculty to have paid the fee to join it. Mine does and so I get all my stuff free. :)

You will need the key too. Downloading the image isn't all you need do. Keys are allocated to you personally etc.

Used before and thankfully found how to make them believe I had DreamSpark Premium - only one department at my uni has Premium, my one didn't but it worked fine picking a completely unrelated department that does have it.

Uni's don't need to pay a fee neither do colleges/schools if they are only using dreamspark standard. They only pay a fee if they want to use dreamspark premium which includes a wider range of Microsoft software. The Windows Server 2012 edition is available free to dreamspark standard members and if the educational institute is not listed you can register using your .ac.uk email address instead.

You should still be able to use your ac.uk email address to sign-up even if your place of work that has issued the email address has not registered with the service. An ac.uk email address is all they need to offer you access to dreamspark standard.

Have just tested the new registration process out as it has changed a lot since I first signed up in 2010. If your uni isn't listed when clicking on the Get verified through my School and typing it in but you have a valid ac.uk email address, clear the school name box and type in "ac." which should bring up the option "[—use My Ac. Uk Email Address—]", click on it and then press continue. Then all you have to do is enter your ac.uk email address and a verification email will be sent to your ac.uk email. The "[—use My Ac. Uk Email Address—]" option is for those whose uni/school is not currently registered with dreamspark standard/premium.

Fair enough. Didn't realise there was a standard and premium. We must have premium as we get all the Windows versions from 2000 onwards pretty much.

Done and done! Will be downloading later on.

I can confirm this worked and I have access to dreamspark standard. No access to premium though, it says it requires a specific login from my administrator.

I know at my uni if you have modules in informatics/ engineering you can get upgraded to the premium account and get Win 7 and 8 for free.

I do computer science, so I have access to everything :D
Anyone need anything from there?

And would Windows 2012 Server work on a HP server (the ones that often get posted on here with £100 cashback?) If so, I'll have to get one!

Can you install Windows Server 2012 on a laptop?

You can...

it just asked me for my ac.uk email address. I just used my alumni one and am happily downloading away.

The uni has to add you onto dream spark, and you normally only get that if your in the right faculty. I'm a software engineering student so I'm eligible. You can also get things like windows for free, i got windows 8 for free for my home computer :D.

Should do, though you will want a ram upgrade if you haven't already.

If I still had an .ac.uk account i'd be doing the very same (win2012 on HP microserver). :)

I was lucky enough to grab an ml110 g7 for £110 after cashback, upgrade to 12GB of ram for £50ish quid, stick a couple of 2tb hard drives, a 1tb hard drive and replace the 250GB one with a 150GB velociraptor, works perfectly with windows server 2012 :)

I made my account using my NUS extra card and it was OK. I try to upgrade my HP Microserver from Home Server to this, but seems like it is more complicated than I tought. For exemple, I don't know how to connect the client computers to the server (like with http:///connect on WHS).

Windows Server 2012 is more aimed towards network managers/IT professionals and as such isn't designed with consumers in mind. Unlike Windows Homeserver, Windows Server 2012 does not have a client connect utility. The only feature it has that allows you to connect your computers to the server is active directory and even then Windows Server 2012 won't do some of the things that Windows Homeserver can do such as auto backup of your pc's and remote access to files through the web browser. I would stick with Windows Homeserver as it is aimed more towards the consumer and has easy to use built in tools to connect your computers to it. Windows Homeserver is a modified version of Windows server 2003/2008 which has been made easy for the general consumer to use.

Thank you, jordanc93. I discovered this too. I am searching now for a good free backup software for my client computers. Anyway it is strange that such an expensive software has less possibilities than the cheaper version (Essentials), at least from a personal or small's business point of view.
