Summary: Skydrive now offers 25Gb free online storage: http://skydrive.live.com . Next download SD Explorer at http://www.cloudstorageexplorer.com . You can now access your online storage just like a normal hard drive on your computer desktop.
-------------
If you are a mobile person that goes everywhere with a usb stick, always tranferring files for use between computers, and always doing version updates, you will find this useful. If you are a techie expert this may not be such a groundbreaking suggestion, but to novices / medium level users this will be very useful. I have split my sugestion into 2 parts.

PART 1 - Windows Live Skydrive offers 25Gb free online storage. Sign up here: http://skydrive.live.com ... This is great in itself, but it's a hassle to use online. Using the drag and drop facility (available only in Internet explorer, not firefox) you can only drag and drop files (not folders), so it's a hassle manually setting up folders.

PART 2 - The holy grail is to be able to map your online storage to a drive on your normal desktop computer (cloud computing). Download and install this free tool called SD Explorer, and enter your windows live / skydrive username and password: http://www.cloudstorageexplorer.com/ ... The free version of this tool does have a few restrictions but you will find perfectly useable workarounds. You will now be able to use your online storage just like a normal hard drive on your computer desktop.

Might just make your life that teeny weeny bit easier!

But is it totally secure?
#2
I think it's perfectly secure as long as you do basic protections like logging out when not in use, setting up a password for your windows OS login, etc. If you are comfortable using an email account, I think you shoukd be comfortable using this. It's far more secure than walking around with a USB stick or hard drive containing all your data, which could get damaged if dropped, or lost or stolen.

In any case, it's completely free and is a useful and very user friendly facility to have.

Looks useful, thanks :)

This looks really useful, but there are two really big limitations:
Q: Is it possible to map SDExplorer to a drive letter in order to work with my files from third-party file managers or backup tools?
A: No, the current version of the SDExplorer does not support such functionality. It will be implemented in subsequent versions of the SDE.

Q: Why I can't copy a 400 MB file to my SkyDrive account?
A: The SkyDrive service currently offers 25 GB of free personal storage, with individual files limited to 50 MB. However, you can use the PRO edition of SDExplorer that supports files greater than 50 MB.

Can also use Winrar to split a large file into a set of smaller files

so it's like a windows/ie/microsoft only version of dropbox but with more storage space and filesize restrictions?
